Measured in number of students and teachers, the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is the largest science faculty in Finland. There are some 6,000 students taking a basic degree. Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences in the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science and to feed in scientific results for the national and international environment and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scale and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners in Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University of Technology.

Faculty of Science invites applications for

POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCHER IN GREENHOUSE GAS EXCHANGE IN COASTAL WATER ECOSYSTEMS

starting in Spring 2024 for a fixed-term contract of two years.

The post-doctoral researcher will work in the Micrometeorology group in INAR and will contribute to CoastClim research activities at the new ICOS Station in Tvärminne. The work will focus on sea-atmosphere interaction relevant to the coastal water ecosystem carbon cycle and methane emission. More specifically she/he will contribute to 1) address the spatial variability of CO2 and CH4 fluxes and their drivers; 2) develop new parameterizations of gas transfer velocity appropriate for coastal water systems; 3) advance methodological aspects related to air-water gas exchange.

These will be addressed by using a combination of different methodologies including eddy covariance technique from fixed tower and mobile platform, surface water pCO2 and pCH4 measurements, water turbulence measurements by ADV/ADCP, machine learning tools, advanced fine resolution flux footprint models (e.g. based on LES).

Specific duties of the position include:

  • Field work in coastal water by using small boats and/or research vessels.
  • The application of quantitative analytical methods to large datasets.
  • Presentation of results at scientific meetings.
  • Publishing of results in scientific journals.
  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students (teaching can take up to 5% of annual working time of 1612 hours).

Required qualifications:

  • PhD in a field that is relevant to the research topics, e.g. atmospheric science,

geophysics, marine science, environmental science or similar.

  • Good technical skills to work in the field, and in particular experience with any technique for measuring gas fluxes in marine environments.
  • Knowledge of basic and advanced tools to analyse atmospheric and environmental data.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proficient coding skills in at least one of: R, Matlab, Python, Fortran.
  • Good skills in written and spoken English.
  • Evidence of ability to publish results in relevant journals.
  • Good numerical and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team.

The salary of the position will be 3600–3900 euros/month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience. The position will be filled with a 6 month trial period.
