Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Low-Power, High-Speed Flexible and Printed Electronics)

Updated: over 1 year ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 17 Sep 2022

Together, Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Leading experts in the fields of technology, health and society are changing the world at Finland’s second largest multidisciplinary higher education institution. www.tuni.fi/en

We have a position opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher Fellow  in the Laboratory for Future Electronics (LFE) group at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences of Tampere University within our new Academy Consortium Project “HI-PHOTO-SINTER”. Tampere University (TAU) is the lead, partnered with VTT Research’s Printed Intelligence , targeting advanced low-power, high-speed flexible electronics. Benefits include: (1) low-cost, ultra-low power autonomous soft electronic wearable Internet-of-Things (IoT) sensor systems; and (2) Advanced high-κ dielectrics and metal-oxide semiconductors compatible with a limited processing thermal budget.

Specifically, TAU will explore novel material processing of high-κ dielectrics and high mobility metal-oxide channel semiconductors atop soft substrates using atomic layer deposition (ALD). VTT will advance printing to enable reduced gate lengths with minimal gate overlap. Together, they will realize a print defined high-frequency amplifier.

A mobility plan includes exchanges (~3 months) with Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio USA) with short visits to Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan USA).

Laboratory for Future Electronics

LFE investigates technologies and solutions related to energy-autonomy (storage and harvesting), sensors, conformably wearable electronics (soft/stretchable, on-skin, textile), and hybrid system integration. Strong emphasis is placed on scalable, low-cost manufacturing methods such as printing as well as the integration of printed components and circuits with more conventional component assembly methods. LFE explores new device and circuit approaches based on printable organic and metal oxide semiconductors.

LFE is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure for flexible and thin-film electronics, including a wide range of precision printing machines, an integrated inert environment cluster tool incorporating printing, coating, vacuum evaporation, ALD and characterization, and a full range of characterization tools. Also, a wide set of auxiliary facilities are available at Tampere University (e.g. UV-Vis, PL, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and more).

Job description

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a talented and highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to lead the research project “HI gh-resolution, Printing-Based Patterning and PHOTO nic SINTER ing for High-Speed, Low-Voltage Metal-Oxide Thin Film Transistors (HI-PHOTO-SINTER)”, which requires a strong background in the development of novel materials processing, device physics and full characterization of both. The project involves processing, characterization of new materials and crystal structures, and device fabrication and detailed characterization. The project is part of the Academy of Finland’s “Academy Project Funding” program.

You will be integrated in a team of students and senior researchers with competences ranging from chemistry, physics, device engineering. You may also be involved in the supervision of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and some teaching duties in the future.

Requirements

You are an enthusiastic, highly motivated researcher holding a PhD in related fields. Suitable fields of study are electrical engineering, electronics, physics, materials science and chemistry. We require strong hands-on experience in fabrication of thin film devices (e.g., PVD, ALD, printed electronics) and characterization (e.g., I-V, C-V, mobility, transconductance, gain, interface states, XRD, SEM, TEM, etc.), willingness to perform multifaceted experimental work. The work requires high level of experimental skills and analytical mindset for interpreting the measured data.

You are a team player able to work with an international multidisciplinary research teams. Your strengths include strong methodological background, excellent analytical skills, very good writing skills, high motivation for innovation, and flexibility to work and deliver results. The position is targeted for you if you have recently received a Ph.D. degree, preferably not more than 2 years ago, so that you may gain further experience and advance the career.

A mobility exchange is expected at least once to USA for up to 3-months.

We offer

The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of 3.5 years. The planned starting date is 1 December 2022 or as mutually agreed. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System . The position of a Postdoctoral Researcher is placed on the job demands level 5 (teaching and research staff) and salary includes personal performance element.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University.

Printed Intelligence is recognized as leading-edge research areas of Tampere University and is awarded with national Research Infrastructure Roadmap status by The Finnish Research Infrastructure Committee.
