Postdoctoral Research Fellow (Financial Computing and Data Analytics)

Updated: about 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 09 May 2022

Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position in the Unit of Computing Sciences at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences . The unit of Computing Sciences covers all essential areas of Information Technology. We develop methods, theories, and technologies for digitalized data and information centric society. Common to all our fields are strong mathematical, algorithmic, and computational thinking and understanding of social networks and human-computer interaction.

The group of Financial Computing and Data Analytics focuses on methodological and empirical research on statistical computing, data science, and mathematical modelling, mainly with applications in finance and risk management. Our financial markets research is based on both modern data science approaches and more traditional statistical methods with rich data sets.

The open position is related to project entitled “Tip Chains: Modeling and Analyzing Information Flows in Insider Networks” that introduces a new graph model that we empirically estimate to analyse how private information flows via insiders’ social connections and to what extent outside investors take advantage of it. The project is funded by the Foundation for the Advancement of Finnish Securities Markets.

Job description:

To strengthen our team, we are looking for a talented and highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow with a strong background in graph algorithms, complex networks or/and statistics. The question about the leakage of private information in insiders’ social network is crucially important both scientifically and societally. Methodologically, the main challenge is to develop and implement efficient graph algorithms to approximate an NP-hard exact solution for the model.  The developed methods can be used in other contexts, e.g. more realistic epidemic models. During the two-year project, three papers will be submitted to top-tier journals.

Participation in acquiring research grants and the supervision of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students in the future is possible.

Requirements

We are seeking an enthusiastic, highly motivated researcher holding a PhD in computer science, applied mathematics, quantitative finance/economics, statistics, data science, or physics. Expertise in graph algorithms or complex networks is highly appreciated. Early knowledge of financial market research is not necessary but is considered a plus. We require strong programming skills. The applicant should have an excellent command of written and oral English and good communication skills. Excellent writing skills are necessary, and the candidate should have a proven publication record. We also require good teaching skills or willingness to develop them.

We offer

The position is filled for a fixed-term period of 2 years. The position can be filled from August 1st 2022, or based on an agreement. A trial period of six (6) months applies.

The salary will be based on both the position requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Salary system of Finnish universities . The position of a Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on the job demand level 5 (teaching and research staff). A typical salary for Postdoctoral Research Fellow is approximately 3400 €/month.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University .
