About the Department

The Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering (NBE)  aims at understanding of system-level dynamic functions of the human brain, mind and body. The research, enabled by state-of-the-art technology and computational methods, leads to discoveries and technological breakthroughs that contribute to health and wellbeing.

NBE brings together systems and cognitive neuroscience, biophysics, and biomedical engineering. The levels of description range from molecular and cellular measures to noninvasive neuroimaging and behaviour. New generations of multidisciplinary scientists and engineers are educated by engaging them with cutting-edge science and technology.

We are looking for a highly motivated post-doctoral researcher to work on thermophotonic and electrochemical energy converters based on III-V compound semiconductors. The position mainly deals with epitaxial growth and material development and fully integrates with our group's activities in fabricating, analysing or designing III-V devices in collaboration with a versatile research team of theoreticians and experimentalists. Depending on your background, you will have several avenues to contribute to the experimental work of our group aiming to demonstrate the next break-throughs in solid state cooling and electrochemical energy converters, such as thermophotonic refrigerators [1] [2] .

Our wish list for the selected candidate includes:

·        Experience on epitaxial growth of compound semiconductors (emphasis on GaAs based materials and MOCVD)

·        Good understanding of the physics and operation of compound semiconductor light emitting/solar cells devices

·        Team working skills, sociable character and good command of English

·        Resourcefulness and aptitude for creative, open minded and independent thinking

·        Doctor's degree and studies on a suitable research field

A succesful candidate is likely to be an ambitious and resourceful researcher wanting to master high efficiency compound semiconductor device fabrication, design and analysis. You will be working in a research team of ~10 persons working on closely connected topics. The research takes place at Aalto University ( ) and Micronova clean room facilities ( ), located at Espoo, Finland. Micronova is the largest clean room facility in the nordic countries and Finland/Helsinki offers a clean, safe and naturally beautiful environment having several world's best country/city nominations over the past few years, as well as four distinct seasons, outstanding social security system and a high standard of living.

The position is scheduled for 2+2 years. The salary levels are based on the university policies, typically setting the salary of a post-doctoral researcher to ~3.8 k€/month. We wish to fill the position as soon as possible.

If you are interested in the position, please submit your CV, motivation letter, certificate of studies and selected recommendations/referees to our electronic recruiting system Saima using “Apply now!” link below by 30.7.2020. The deadline may be continued if no suitable candidates are found, and being able to start relatively soon will be considered a benefit. Please also note that while we will also monitor applications sent by e-mail, we will reply only to such applications in the case they are shortlisted. If you have further enquiries, please contact us by email at jani.oksanen (at) or (for general questions about the recruiting process) lotta.maltolahti (at) (on holiday 20.7.-9.8.).
