We are now looking for
9 Doctoral Researchers
as part of the Doctoral Education Pilot for Mathematics of Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (DREAM) at the University of Oulu.
DREAM will educate in total 100 doctors located at 7 Finnish universities in a diverse and multidisciplinary setting, encompassing applied mathematics, physics, engineering, and applied sciences. The doctoral researchers are trained by the experts on fields related to the Flagship of Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (FAME) in close interaction with companies and other sectors of the society.
This call at the University of Oulu consists of positions in the following Research Units with the respective fields of the degree outlined:
- 2 positions in the Research Unit of Mathematical Sciences , Faculty of Science.
In the field of Computational Mathematics. - 5 positions in the Research Unit of Health Sciences and Technology , Faculty of Medicine. In the fields of Medical Physics and Technology or Biomedical Engineering.
- 1 position in the Research Unit of Space Physics and Astronomy , Faculty of Science.
In the field of Space Physics. - 1 position in the NMR Research Unit , Faculty of Science. In the field of Physics.

The research projects and your duties
We are searching for excellent candidates to fit the profiles of the participating units and their intended research projects. Each applicant will need to indicate a primary and an optional secondary position that they apply to from the projects offered in this call listed below. - RU Mathematical Sciences: Scalability of learned reconstructions for cone-beam computed tomography and applications in medicine.
Supervisor: Andreas Hauptmann - RU Mathematical Sciences: Advanced image reconstruction for low-field magnetic resonance imaging.
Supervisor: Andreas Hauptmann - RU Health Sciences and Technology: One-stop shop MRI: AI-assisted combined clinical and quantitative MRI for comprehensive tissue characterization.
Supervisor: Miika Nieminen - RU Health Sciences and Technology: Future multi-spectral CT: reconstruction, artefact reduction and tissue quantification algorithm development with diagnostic scanners.
Supervisor: Miika Nieminen - RU Health Sciences and Technology: Accelerate and enhance image quality in cardiac MRI.
Supervisor: Timo Liimatainen - RU Health Sciences and Technology: Methods to predict and search radiation dose outliers in medical imaging.
Supervisor: Matti Hanni - RU Health Sciences and Technology: Enabling high-resolution hierarchical imaging of musculoskeletal tissues.
Supervisor: Mikko Finnilä - RU Space Physics and Astronomy: Space weather influence on ionospheric dynamics.
Supervisor: Heikki Vanhamäki - NMR Research Unit: Novel NMR methods for analyzing chemical structure and composition of rubber compounds.

As doctoral researcher in the DREAM consortium your duties include:
- You will focus primarily on your doctoral studies and your research project.

Who are you?
You have or are expecting to finish your Master’s degree by 30. June 2024 in a relevant field to the projects, with very good or excellent grades. You are fluent in written and spoken English, and are comfortable to communicate in interdisciplinary teams. For further requirements, see the the University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS ).
Further we are searching for excellent candidates with project-specific qualifications:
- RU Mathematical Sciences: A MSc in Applied or Computational Mathematics, or related fields. Good programming skills are necessary. The ideal candidate also has a background in Inverse Problems, Physics and/or Medical Physics, possible knowledge of data science is a plus.
- RU Health Sciences and Technology: Applicants have MSc (or equivalent) in medical physics, biomedical engineering, imaging, or mathematics or have studied these topics as part of your degree. Successful applicants are interested in medical imaging, image reconstruction, experimental imaging, X-ray physics where applicable, and/or data analysis. Knowledge on machine learning and AI is a plus.
- RU Research Unit of Space Physics and Astronomy: MSc in Space Physics or a related field. Good programming skills (Matlab and/or Python) are necessary. It is considered an advantage if the candidate has experience in using large data sets related to ionospheric research, such as ground magnetometer data and/or LEO satellite data. Background knowledge about machine learning applications is a plus.
- NMR Research Unit: A MSc (or equivalent) in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Experience in experimental NMR spectroscopy is a plus.
Salary
The positions are fixed-term for 3 years as of 01. August 2024.
The salary will be based on the levels 2-4 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600 € per month (before taxes). A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
