The University of Helsinki has opened positions for two 5-year university researchers and two 3-year postdoctoral researchers in marine sciences at Tvärminne Zoological Station. The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the best multidisciplinary research universities in the world, and is an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. It operates on four campuses in Helsinki and in 15 other locations.
The Tvärminne Zoological Station is a part of the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences, University of Helsinki, Finland. It serves as a centre for a large variety of high-quality biological research, carries out environmental monitoring, and offers facilities for visiting scientists, field courses and seminars. The area is characterized by high variation in biotopes and species richness. The station was founded in 1902 and provides good background data for studying long-term environmental changes. The station also serves as the national hub for the recently established Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research (CoastClim), which investigates the links between coastal biodiversity, carbon cycling, and climate feedback (see www.coastclim.org ). CoastClim is a strategic spearhead partnership between the University of Helsinki and Stockholm University that focuses on strengthening collaborative marine ecosystem and climate change research between our universities. The effort combines the major marine and atmospheric units at the universities.
Tvärminne Zoological Station and the CoastClim Centre is inviting applications for the following 4 positions:
The researchers will be joining the transdisciplinary CoastClim centre, which offers a framework that provides state-of the-art infrastructure and new integrative science to deliver an in-depth understanding of the combined biodiversity and climate problem in coastal ecosystems. CoastClim offers a vibrant research atmosphere with several senior scientists, post docs and an interdisciplinary PhD-collegium.
For the university researcher positions, we are looking for advanced post docs to more senior scientists that have strong and well documented experience and track-records in their fields. We seek scientists that can develop successful research projects that have potential for further development and extramural funding. Successful applicants will work in a trans-disciplinary manner and foster collaboration within CoastClim. For all the positions close collaboration will be expected with the Baltic Sea Centre at Stockholm University, but position 3 (post doc in Marine Systems Ecology) will have Stockholm as a primary placement.
In terms of experience and profile we are inviting applications broadly, and hence the broad definitions into Marine Ecology or Marine Systems Ecology. For the Marine Ecology positions, we invite applications from scientists that have experience in, for example, biodiversity and ecosystem function-relationships of coastal animal and plant/algal communities, carbon and nutrient cycling, habitat mapping, and/or habitat-function relationships. For Marine Systems Ecology, relevant skills may include carbon-cycling and greenhouse gas dynamics in coastal ecosystems, microbial ecology, energy flows, food webs, systems ecology, and/or modelling of carbon and nutrients.
Successful candidates should have the proven capability to conduct independent research, publish in scientific journals and have excellent analytical and methodological skills. In addition, the candidates are expected to have good communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary working community.
The salary will be based on the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities (typically 3200-4000 €/month for post docs and 3600-5000 €/month for university researchers).
Please submit your application as a single pdf file, which includes the following documents in English:
- Motivational letter including research Interests (max. 3 pages), in which the applicant outlines how their expertise would contribute to the research area
- Curriculum vitae, including teaching merits (max. 3 pages)
- List of publications
- Names and contact details of two referees
Please submit your application as a single pdf file using the University of Helsinki Recruitment System via the Apply link. All positions have a 6-month trial period.
Deadline for applications: January 15, 2023
Further information on the positions may be obtained from:
