Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 25 Oct 2021

Are you all about science and technology? Would you like to work in a meaningful role with real responsibility and excellent learning opportunities? Do you want to work with superb colleagues who are experts in their field to drive a sustainable future and tackle the greatest challenges of our time? VTT might be just the place for you.

VTT is one of the leading applied research organisations in Europe. What unites us are curiosity, a passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. Our cross-disciplinary community of over 2000 brilliant minds is focused on creating impact through science-based innovation. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Get to know us further by exploring VTT’s research infra at VTT World

We are now looking for a Master’s Thesis Worker to join our Nuclear Reactor Materials team. Join us - and let’s make an impact together!

As a Master’s Thesis Worker, you will study corrosion and magnetite scale formation in the secondary circuit surfaces of pressurized water reactor (PWR) nuclear power plants. Nuclear power plants are an important part of sustainable energy production in Finland and worldwide. An important aspect of nuclear safety is to ensure the integrity of structural materials during the lifetime of the plant. The scaling of steam generator tubes can enhance corrosion of structural materials and reduce heat transfer efficiency.

As a Master’s Thesis Work, you will:
  • Conduct a literature study of magnetite deposition.
  • Study the effects of water chemistry and impurities on magnetite scale formation in simulated PWR environment using experimental set-up.
  • Characterise the deposits using SEM or other methods.
  • Conduct electrochemical measurements to study corrosion and deposit formation.

Who we are looking for:
  • You are a student in material science, metallurgy, chemistry, physics or a similar area.
  • You want to conduct experimental work in our state-of-the-art laboratories.
  • Knowledge of corrosion and electrochemistry will be a plus.

As a person, we hope that you are:
  • Open-minded
  • Communicative
  • Enjoy working in an international team.

With VTT, you’ll enjoy:
  • Impactful work for the future. As a leading applied research organization, we are on a mission to bring exponential hope to the world by joining together people, businesses, science and technology. We tackle the biggest challenges of our time – from climate change and resource sufficiency to industrial renewal and smart healthcare – and turn them into sustainable growth.
