What unites are curiosity, passion for learning and a purpose: to solve the biggest challenges of our time and turn them into sustainable growth and well-being. In recent years, we have created ground-breaking innovations such as the world's fastest and most accurate radiation detector, a cancer-sniffing sensor device for smartphones, and a headphone set entirely made of microbial materials. Get to know us further by exploring VTT’s research infra at VTT World

We are looking for a Master’s thesis worker for green hydrogen storage and supply options for large-scale industrial users in Finland - join us and let’s make an impact together!

You will be working as part of Renewable energy processes -team which is part of Industrial energy and hydrogen research area. We provide professional science-based solutions and scale-up services using state-of-the-art research infrastructure.

VTT has recently started a project called FFS - Towards Fossil-free Steelmaking with several partners to enable a transition to electricity- and hydrogen-based steel production in Finland. The solutions developed in FFS for hydrogen production, supply and storage technologies will be novel in their scale and will also enable application in other large-scale industries.

Your responsibilities as Master's Thesis Worker

This thesis work will focus on state-of-the art and near-future large-scale hydrogen storage (e.g. liquefied hydrogen, lined rock storage (LCR)) technologies to be applied in Finland. Also different hydrogen supply options (e.g. pipelines, high-pressure tube trailers, liquid hydrogen, ammonia, liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC)) will be linked to the storage theme.

The work includes a literature review and techno-economic analyses. Operation and investment costs of the most suitable technologies are mapped and assessed for different industrial concepts for which concrete case examples for hydrogen storage (and transportation) will be created.
