Offer Description

Roosa.ai, a recently funded Research to Business (R2B) project within the Aalto Department of Computer Science, is looking for a:

Machine Learning Engineer

At Roosa.ai, our mission is to make AI robust by addressing the root causes of model failures. We aim to ensure the successful deployment of solutions in real-world scenarios, even in adversarial settings. We already have a solid proof-of-concept for adversarial ML defense with measurable benefits.

We are looking for a candidate that has a strong understanding of AI & ML and experience of deploying models to production. We appreciate open-mindedness, willingness to dive deep and ability to navigate a domain with more open-ended questions than readily available answers.

Above all, you value the opportunity to potentially become a founding engineer of our startup at the end of the 18-month R2B-project (January 2024 – June 2025).

Your network and team

Roosa.ai currently comprises two team members: Blerta Lindqvist, a PhD candidate and MSc. (Eng) at the Aalto Computer Science Department who is finishing up her dissertation on adversarial machine learning. She has MScs in machine learning, mobile computing and information security. Her work experience includes positions at Nvidia and F-Secure. Antti Ylimutka, a BSc. of Aalto School of Business, who has spent over a decade in the Finnish startup scene, with the last two companies exited to Apple and Amazon.

The project’s steering group includes representatives from global leaders in the AI/ML-domain, leading local venture capital funds, cybersecurity experts and, of course, representation from Aalto University and Business Finland. The project is overseen by Professor Tuomas Aura, a specialist in Information Security and Privacy.

Your role and goals

Your main responsibilities include turning our research into production-grade software. And yes, this means getting your hands dirty with programming. You are expected to contribute to the overall software architecture and any framework related choices, fostering a culture of technical excellence.

Since we are in the early stages of development, you do not shy away from customer interactions or asking challenging questions. Over time, you should strive to be a technical leader who leads by example, and deeply cares about the team around you.

Your experience

We expect you to have a minimum of 3 years of professional experience in the field of AI/ML/Cybersecurity or another applicable field, along with a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science or related fields. You have developed and maintained machine learning systems in a production environment, are up to date with recent developments in AI and ML and understand relevant frameworks (e.g. PyTorch/Tensorflow).

Any experience with DevOps in on-prem or cloud environments will be considered a plus. Clear written and oral communication skills in English are essential, along with comfort in a customer-facing environment. An existing Finnish work permit is required from the candidate.

What we offer

We offer an opportunity to experience and define the bleeding edge of AI/ML security. You’ll get to contribute to the type of company and product we will build. If we decide to offer you the opportunity to become a co-founder at the end of the project, the R2B-funding offers a compelling path to potentially becoming one as we get to de-risk the early phase of a startup without losing control of the future company. You get to work with two talented individuals equipped with an exceptionally dry sense of humor. We have a wide network of investors and experts around us, and you’ll be employed by the highly esteemed Aalto University.

The salary range for the position is 4000 - 5000 € per month before taxes depending on the applicant’s experience and education. The salary includes a pre-budgeted index-raise for 2025. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health benefits. The position is located at the Aalto University Otaniemi campus, but hybrid work is acceptable.

Ready to apply?

If the above piqued your interest, please submit your application through our recruitment system Workday. The deadline for applications is 31.12.2023. The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate has been identified.

Please note: Aalto University’s employees and visitors should apply for the position via our internal system Workday -> find jobs (not external aalto.fi webpage on open positions) by using their existing Workday account

To apply, please share the following application materials in one pdf file:

  • Cover letter
  • CV
  • Any examples of previous work

Aalto University reserves the right for justified reasons to leave the position open, to extend the application period, reopen the application process, and to consider candidates who have not submitted applications during the application period.
