Offer Description

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Turku (UTU ) in Finland welcomes Laboratory Engineer applications in the group of Prof. Jovana V. Milić .

The position is related to the ERC Starting Grant project “Smart hybrid materials for opto(electro)ionics” (SmartHyMat) from the 1st of  September 2024 to 31st of  August 2029 led by Professor Jovana V. Milić. The project studies smart and sustainable energy technologies based on stimuli-responsive hybrid organic-inorganic materials. This 4-years fixed-term position starts on September 1, 2024 and ends on August 31, 2028. The start of employment is expected from the beginning of September, but it can be postponed upon mutual agreement. This position is supported by SUSMAT Profi funding.


Job description

This position will include the development of smart and sustainable energy technologies based on stimuli-responsive hybrid organic-inorganic materials. This will involve supporting the research efforts on molecular design as well as synthetic and solid-state material chemistry, followed by the analysis of structure and optoelectronics. The work will mostly involve supporting the research on molecular synthesis and characterization of organic and hybrid materials, as well as their implementation in functional devices, including equipment maintenance and training of junior researchers. Laboratory Engineer will be provided with support in his/her research, leadership, and overall professional development.


Who we are looking for

We are seeking either a recently graduated PhD or D.Sc., who can count this position as a post doc-visit, or a M.Sc., who is capable to do her/his postgraduate studies in parallel with this job. The requirements of the job will be defined according to the applicant’s background.

The applicant is expected to have the following qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. or an MSc in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field, with a focus on Organic/Supramolecular Chemistry and Organic/Hybrid Electronics.

  • Previous experience in synthesis and/or characterization of materials, as well as basic equipment for structural and optoelectronic characterization.

  • Experience in solid-state chemistry or electronics is considered as an advantage

  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral).

  • Strong laboratory experience.

  • A management experience in the laboratory is considered as an advantage.

  • Commitment to scientific integrity and willingness to work in a collaborative setting

Salary and trial period

The salary is in accordance with the University salary system for other university staff. For a Laboratory Engineer with a PhD background a level will be 10 and with an MSc level 9. An additional personal performance will added to task-specific salary (6%-50%). The position and salary will commensurate with qualifications and experiences and basis on the University salary system. The salary will be in the beginning of the employment approximately 4 000€ - 4500 € per month when a person holds PhD and 3400 € - 3800 € per month for a person with an MSc. The exact salary will depend on the person’s competence and research experience and will be determined in a contract.

A six-month trial period applies to the position.
