The Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) is a multi- and interdisciplinary research unit based in physics, chemistry, meteorology, forest sciences, environmental sciences and social sciences at the University of Helsinki. INAR aims to strengthen the internationally leading, integrated multidisciplinary research and education environment for atmospheric and Earth system science, and to provide scientific results for national and international environmental and climate policy. It performs multiscale research from molecular to global scales, and focuses on climate change, air quality, biogeochemical cycles and ecosystem processes. INAR has INAR Finland Network partners at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, University of Eastern Finland and Tampere University.

The Faculty of Science invites applications for the position of           

LABORATORY ENGINEER, LABORATORY TECHNICIAN OR STAFF SCIENTIST (UNIVERSITY RESEARCHER)

in atmospheric sciences. The position is 3-year fixed term position starting from 1.11.2022 or according to the agreement. The position is in Kumpula Campus in Helsinki, Finland.

The work includes technical maintenance and development of SMEAR III observation sites in Helsinki. The tasks include development, testing and implementing advanced measurement technologies and data evaluation algorithms. The person needs to be experienced in atmospheric and environmental measurement systems and technologies both in the field and in the laboratory. The work requires independent and versatile approach as the technical team in Helsinki is small, but efficient. Good cooperation skills are essential, including good communication skills in English as co-operation with the international research team in Helsinki is critical.

The laboratory engineer needs to have a Master´s degree (or similar) in suitable field or proven expertise in experimental natural sciences or engineering. The staff scientist (university researcher) position requires a PhD degree in applicable field. The work requires climbing a mast (maximum 60 meters). The starting salary will be ca. 4000-5000 euros/month (staff scientist) or ca. 3000-4300 euros/month (laboratory engineer) and depending on the qualifications and merits of the nominee.
