The University of Helsinki and the Finnish Museum of Natural History are developing FinBIF, the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility (https://laji.fi). The aim of FinBIF is to combine all biodiversity data from Finland to one place for government officials, researchers and for the general public. Our occurrence data warehouse database contains at the moment over 48 million records and is growing all the time. Geo-spatial information about the species is important for their protection in and in land-use planning.

The Finnish Museum of Natural History is now looking for a

GIS Specialist

to work in our Species Information Team within the Biodiversity Informatics Unit. The Species Information Team works in seamless cooperation with our unit's ICT team. The GIS Specialist is expected to have experience in using ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar geospatial softwares. Additionally, knowledge of the R programming language and its application in geospatial tasks, experience in managing point and vector geospatial data, and experience with in building or using WMS or WFS geospatial interfaces would be are considered advantageous. We value diverse expertise related to data management.
The successful candidate will plan, in collaboration with our other team memberss, geospatial products and their definitions for various stakeholders and, when necessary, participate in planning the setup and maintenance of the infrastructure related to data transfer between the data repository and the geospatial database, performance, backup, and the server infrastructure.


About you

Succeeding in this position requires a good understanding and practical expertise in geospatial data applications, as well as the ability to design geospatial products and services to meet our user’s needs. Additionally, server expertise related to data sharing, database skills, and previous experience in the development and analysis of applied geospatial products will be considered an advantage. The work languages are English and Finnish.

The position is a full time fixed term position: 1.2.2024 - 31.12.2024. Part time work is possible as well if you are for example finishing your studies.

The monthly salary is based on the job requirement level 9 in the salary system of Finnish universities for specialist and support staff. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance.

About Luomus

The Finnish Museum of Natural History Luomus  is an independent institute of the University of Helsinki and the national museum in the field of natural history in Finland. The duties of Luomus are to amass, maintain and display its collections, and to conduct related research. The collections serve research, teaching, and public education in biology, geology, and biodiversity, and form part of the international network of natural history repositories. LUOMUS has five units: Botany, Zoology, Natural Sciences, Biodiversity Informatics and Public Engagement. The institute has a staff of c. 160 and manages national natural history collections of c. 13.6 million specimens and datasets of c. 47 million observations.
