The Department of Computing at the University of Turku is searching for a project researcher or a research assistant in data science. The starting time is 1.10.2022 or later, as agreed. The duration of this fixed-term position is 24 months. The position is full-time, but part-time work is also possible based on mutual understanding.

This position focuses on the development of open data science methods, supporting the international collaborations of the research team in computational humanities and life sciences. The work includes R package development, implementation of statistical data analysis and machine learning pipelines in high-performance computing (HPC) environments, and support tasks in research coordination and teaching. The work is supervised by associate professor Leo Lahti (Department of Computing).

We anticipate that a successful applicant has a drive to develop their independent scientific thinking, good problem-solving and collaboration skills, and motivation to work in a multidisciplinary environment. The position requires experience in scientific programming (e.g. R, Julia). Excellent skills in English (written and spoken) are required. Background in a computationally oriented field (e.g. data science/ mathematics/ statistics/ physics/ computer science/ bioinformatics/ ecology/ computational humanities) or similar, and in the application domains can be considered as a benefit for the application.

The qualifications for the positions are specified in the Turku University Rules of Procedure https://www.utu.fi/en/university/organisation . A person selected for the post of a project researcher must have a higher university degree. The degree must be completed by the end of the application period. The research assistant should hold a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, an active study right at the University of Turku and be ready to start the Master's thesis in a topic set by the task.

The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a project researcher, the salary will be on the job demands chart on levels 2-4, where the task-specific salary component is 2108,40–2628,85 euros per month. For a research assistant, the salary is at level 1, where the task-specific salary component is 1917,09 euros per month. In addition, a personal work performance component will be paid. The personal performance component is 6% - 50% of the task-specific salary component.

A six (6) month trial period applies to the position.
