  • programming languages, platforms, and frameworks
  • software security and privacy
  • software development methodologies (e.g., agile, DevOps, RegOps, MLOps and AI for SE)
  • green/sustainable software engineering

Potential doctoral supervisors (PhD advisors) are Prof. Jaakko Järvi , Prof. Ville Leppänen and Ass. Prof. Tuomas Mäkilä . You can learn more about our Software Engineering research group here: https://sweng.utu.fi/ .

The positions start on 1.8.2023 or 1.1.2024, or by mutual agreement. The funding is for three years, which is the intended duration of the PhD program.

The positions are funded by Finland’s recent major investment in doctoral training , in which altogether 49 PhD positions were allocated to Software Engineering. As a doctoral researcher in one of these positions, you will belong to a research network of Finland’s top software engineering researchers from nine different universities (see https://softwareengineering.fi/ ). The initiative that funds the position is known as the “Software Engineering Doctoral Education Pilot”, and it places extra emphasis on the support framework around doctoral studies, aimed at helping doctoral researchers obtain their degree in the expected timeframe.

Who we are looking for

A Masters’ degree in Computer Science or a related field is required (a Bachelors’ suffices if it qualifies for doctoral studies in the country of that degree, e.g., the US and UK).

Persons selected for a post of doctoral researcher in this call will also have to apply for a study right for doctoral studies in the University of Turku before they can start in their positions. This takes place after hiring decisions; you can read about the process here . Applicants who already have been granted a study right for doctoral studies in the University of Turku before 1.11.2023 do not qualify for this funding.
