The University of Helsinki Faculty of Theology (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/faculty-of-theology ) is the largest of the three academic theology units in Finland. In addition, it is one of Europe’s largest units in the field of theology and religious studies in terms of student numbers. The Faculty is a non-denominational academic community.
The mission of the Faculty is to conduct research on religion and its various manifestations, provide teaching based on research, and engage in national and international social debate. International assessments have found that the research conducted at the Faculty is of a high quality, and the Faculty cooperates actively with equivalent top-level research units.
The Faculty of Theology invites applications for an
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/PROFESSOR OF DOGMATICS
from January 1, 2023 or by agreement. The successful applicant will be appointed to a fixed-term assistant professorship or associate professorship in the tenure track system or a permanent professorship, depending on the appointee's qualifications and career stage. The position is in the Department of Systematic Theology.
The Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor of Dogmatics studies religions, especially Christian churches, their historical and current doctrines as well as theological thinking and practices related to them and provides research-based teaching. The duties of an Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor also include public engagement, tasks related to the University community (administration) and other tasks.
Dogmatics as discipline need not be limited to any religious community: it can study any religion. As a scientific discipline, dogmatics does not stand for or against the doctrines it studies.
SELECTION CRITERIA
An appointee to the position of assistant professor/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills required for the position. In addition, the appointee shall have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means. When assessing the applicants’ qualifications, attention shall be paid not only to research work and teaching qualifications, but also to success in the acquisition of external research funding as well as international scholarly work and other international experience.
An appointee to the position of professor shall hold a doctoral degree and have high-level academic qualifications; experience in leading scientific research; the ability to provide research-based teaching and supervise dissertations and theses; as well as evidence of international cooperation in the research field they represent. The appointee shall also have academic leadership skills. When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicants’ activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.
An Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor is required to have proficiency in the Finnish language. In addition, he or she is also required to have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in the Swedish language. When filling the position, foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from the language requirement without a separate application. Nevertheless, a foreign citizen or a non-native Finnish citizen appointed to the position is required to acquire a reasonable level of proficiency in Finnish within three years of time. The employer supports language learning. Successful completion of the task also requires a good command of English.
WHAT WE OFFER

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor/associate professor) or levels 8–10 (professor) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual gross salary of an assistant professor/associate professor is approximately €50,000–€68,500, and that of a professor, approximately €64,000–€96,000, depending on their qualifications and work experience.
