Offer Description

The HiLIFE - Institute of Biotechnology (BI) is a research institute that operates at the highest international level. It includes 40 research groups and 250 researchers. The Institute is situated in the Viikki science park. For more information on the Institute, please visit https://www.helsinki.fi/en/hilife-institute-of-biotechnology .

The HiLIFE - Institute of Biotechnology, Varjosalo laboratory of Molecular Systems Biology / Pathology, invites applications for a  DOCTORAL RESEARCHER

The Varjosalo lab has a longstanding interest in the understanding of how key cellular signaling molecules; protein kinases and transcription factors mediate their signaling potential and how the signaling is changed in diseases in the immunology and oncology axis. For this purpose, we have developed experimental and computational methods to identify the protein-interactions formed by these signaling molecules, and established assays to study the activities, substrates and targets for these proteins. Additionally, we employ high-end quantitative mass spectrometry -based proteomics to assess quantitative protein changes, as well as phosphorylation status of the tissues/cells. Furthermore, combining the data from the different sets of ‘omics’ data (proteomics, sequencing, HTS), allows us to generate global and systems level understanding on how disease-causing mutations mediate their effects, also enabling the development of therapeutic or diagnostic approaches.

We are looking for a highly-motivated candidate with a master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioinformatics or other relevant fields. We expect the candidate to have practical experience with “wet lab” work and strong interest in the development and application of modern instrumentation. Experience in proteomics is considered an advantage. The candidate should work well in a team as she/he will be integrated into an international research team of experts in system biology. The working language in the group is English.

The appointee is expected to work full time on the PhD thesis and to complete their thesis and the associated studies in four years. More information about the lab, including the latest research and news, can be found here:
https://www.helsinki.fi/en/hilife-institute-of-biotechnology/research/structural-and-quantitative-biology-research-program/markku-varjosalo-molecular-systems-biology-pathology

Further degree requirement for doctoral researcher position: The appointee must apply, and obtain, the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki within the probationary period of 6 months: https://www.helsinki.fi/en/admissions-and-education/apply-doctoral-programmes/how-apply-doctoral-education

The position is starting from early spring 2024, and is initially for two years. A trial period of 6 months will be applied, and the salary will be based on the Universities salary scheme for teaching and research personnel composed of both task specific and personal performance components. The starting salary is ca. 2500 euros, depending on the qualifications and experience of the applicant.

The deadline for the applications is 15th of March, but the position will be filled immediately once a suitable candidate has been identified.

Application should include the following documents as a single pdf file: CV, list of publications, motivation letter including a description of your research interests, and the names and telephone numbers of at least two referees.

Please submit your application, together with the required attachments, through the University of Helsinki electronic recruitment system by clicking on the ‘Apply for job’ button.  Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via SAP Fiori.
