The University of Oulu is one of the largest universities in Finland, with approximately 15´000 students and 3´000 employees. We, at the University of Oulu, work as part of the international science community to produce new scientific information and science-based solutions. Our university's several specialized research and service units enable extensive and diverse development and career opportunities for experts in various fields. The University of Oulu Graduate School (UniOGS) provides the framework and conditions for high-quality, research-driven doctoral education at the University of Oulu, and field-specific doctoral training is provided by its multidisciplinary doctoral programs.
We are now hiring for a fixed-term full-time
Doctoral researcher
to work for a 6G Flagship + Academy of Finland project in Oulu University, Finland.
We are initiating a project on radio channel characterization for 6G systems. The project will be carried out in the RF group of CWC, within the faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, under the 6G Flagship program.
Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) at University of Oulu, Finland, is one of the leading research units in the field of wireless communications globally. The scope of CWC spans across a comprehensive range of wireless telecommunications topics. The research builds on radio channel competence, expanding through communications signal processing and radio access technologies, finally addressing the wireless internetworking domain. CWC also applies this basic knowledge to the application of wireless technology in several fields, including medical ICT as well as energy and environment.
6G Flagship is the world’s first 6G research program, a global leader in 5G adoption, and a preferred research partner in 6G development. We promote high-quality 6G research to create future know-how and sustainable solutions for society’s needs in the 2030s. We operate under the University of Oulu, which also funds us together with the Academy of Finland.
Open position
Radio propagation models are enablers for research of future systems and testing of communication devices. In the research project we will investigate radio propagation mainly at frequencies above 100 GHz, with emphasis on the multipath characteristics. It is commonly understood that the channel is sparser and more specular at radio frequencies that are above those used by the former network generations. However, how and to what extent, is not well known. Channel characterization is performed by measurements with a channel sounder, parameter estimation, theoretical electro-magnetics, and modelling.
You will contribute to developing measurement systems, both equipment and procedures, conducting radio channel measurements, analysing and estimating parameters of measured radio channel data, and carrying out channel modelling. You are also expected to contribute to other related projects of the group.
Qualification requirements
You must have Master’s degree in Electrical and Communications Engineering or related fields with top grades and some background in radio channel measurements, estimation, and modelling. Moreover, excellent programming, verbal and writing communications skills, background in measurements, mathematical skills for estimation and modelling, and an aptitude for working independently and in a team are required. Knowledge of RF, antennas, and multi-antenna techniques is a plus. You will carry out your doctoral studies during the project and you must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights as defined in http://www.oulu.fi/uniogs/requirements_for_admission .
What we offer
We offer a very interesting research topic, high-end tools for conducting research, and a place in a nice and friendly research group. Furthermore, we offer supervision and facilities to carry out your doctoral studies.
In addition to modern research facilities, we offer personnel benefits such as free occupational healthcare, affordable sport services and endless opportunities to develop your skills and competences. Regular salary is paid 12 months per year, including paid leave and an additional holiday bonus in the summer. The successful candidate will receive also benefits provided by the Finnish government to residents, for example possibility to obtain access to the national healthcare system, tax benefits for employees with children and high-quality, affordable childcare services.
Salary
The salary will be based on the levels [2 – 4] of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (a maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Starting gross salary will be approx. 2300-2600€ per month (before taxes).
How to apply
Applications, together with all relevant enclosures, should be submitted using the electronic application form by August 31st 2022 (23:59 Finnish local time, EET). The application should be written in English and include the following:
1) A motivation letter (max. 2 pages) summarizing prior knowledge and research interests and career plans
2) Curriculum vitae (max. 4 pages), containing contact information of two referees, in accordance with the guidelines in http://www.tenk.fi/en/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae
3) Certificates/Diplomas: Scanned copy of the original doctoral degree certificate and transcript of records and, when necessary, official translations to Finnish or English
4) List of publications (if available)
Only applications containing all relevant appendices and submitted through the online recruitment system will be considered. Top candidates will be invited to an on-site or remote interview.
Further information
The position is fixed-term for four (4) years as of 15th of September 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of six (6) months is applied in the position.
For further information, please contact research director Pekka Kyösti, email: [email protected]
