The Space Research Laboratory at University of Turku, Finland invites applications for contract-based, fixed term Doctoral Researcher/Project Researcher position for 3 years. The starting time of the position is 1st of September 2024 (or upon mutual agreement).
Job description
The Space Research Laboratory in the Department of Physics and Astronomy is a leading European space physics group specialised both in observations and theoretical/computational modelling of space plasmas and solar energetic particles. We are now opening a doctoral researcher/project researcher position for 3 years, funded by a Research Council of Finland project ‘SolShocks’. This position will focus on imaging and spectroscopy of radio shock signatures from the Sun with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR).
Who we are looking for
According to the University of Turku rules of procedure, a person selected for the post of doctoral researcher is required to have a study right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku. In addition, when acquiring their degree or otherwise, they are required to have demonstrated the ability to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan. In this position, the study right of the Doctoral Researcher is required to be within the Doctoral Programme in Exact Sciences (EXACTUS). If the applicant does not have the right to study for a doctoral degree at the University of Turku, they must apply for the right to study for a doctoral degree during the 2024 application periods via the Studyinfo.fi service through the Doctoral Programme in Exact Sciences. If the selected applicant does not have a right to pursue a doctoral degree through studies at the University of Turku at the time of applying, they will be first hired as a Project Researcher. The selected candidate should still apply for the right to pursue a doctoral degree in the Spring 2024 call for applications for a right to study.
Additionally, applicants must have demonstrated that they have the ability to pursue postgraduate studies and complete a doctoral degree according to the research plan. Further, eligibility requirements for doctoral researchers are specified in the University of Turku regulations.
Prior knowledge and useful skills include experience with Python data analysis. In particular, we welcome candidates with previous experience in the fields of space and solar physics or radio astronomy.

Salary and trial period
The salary is based on the salary system of the university’s teaching and research staff. It consists of a task-specific salary component and a personal performance salary component. The task-specific salary component of a Doctoral Researcher is at level 2–4. The component based on personal performance is 6–50% of the task-specific salary. The task-specific salary component of an entry-level Doctoral Researcher is typically on level 2, in which case the salary range is about 2500 € per month at the beginning of the employment relationship.
The position has a trial period of six months.
