Offer Description

University of Turku (UTU), Faculty of Science, Department of Biology invites applications for doctoral researcher/project researcher jointly with the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke). The duration of the employment contract is 1.6.2024- 31.5.2028 and situated part-time 50% at UTU and part-time 50% in Luke. Employment contract starts 1.6.2024, or upon mutual agreement at latest 1.10.2024.

The position is related to a research project of Luke examining how the large carnivores Eurasian lynx and grey wolf may affect white-tailed and roe deer population densities and behavior. It is relevant for harvest management to gain knowledge about mortality and whether different causes of death such as hunting, traffic and carnivores are additional or compensatory. The project examines the impacts of large carnivores on the deer both at the individual and population level. It also examines potential changes in diet ecology of the carnivores in response to changes in the deer populations. The topic of the PhD thesis within the project will be discussed and planned with the doctoral researcher.


Job description

Both in UTU and Luke the main task of the PhD researcher is to conduct PhD research and other research-related tasks supporting researcher career. The position also includes teaching-related tasks at UTU (max. 5 % of working time). Depending on the skills and interest of the PhD researcher, there may also be communication tasks.

Requirements

The qualification requirements of the positions are stated in the University of Turku rules of Procedure. A person selected for the post of doctoral researcher/project researcher is required to have a higher university degree by the time the contract begins (master’s degree or equivalent), preferably in ecology, wildlife biology or a related field.

In addition, when acquiring his or her degree or otherwise, a doctoral researcher is required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan. In this position, you will apply the study right for doctoral studies (in this case autumn 2024) in University of Turku. Thus, please check the student information and application criteria. In particular, please pay attention to mandatory skill level in English.

We expect the doctoral researcher to be motivated and initiative, and to have good communication skills. Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are required in the position. We appreciate skills in wildlife ecology, statistical methods, fieldwork and in handling remote sensing and GPS data.

Salary and trial period

The salaries are determined in accordance with the salary systems of University of Turku and Natural Resources Institute Finland. The initial total monthly salary is ca. 3000 €, depending on earlier experience and skills.

There is a trial period of six (6) months.
