Doctoral researcher position on Machine Learning for 6G

The School of Electrical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. Our portfolio covers fields from natural sciences to engineering and information sciences. Doctoral candidate in Machine Learning for 6G

Scientific context

Communications and sensing have traditionally operated independently, utilizing separate frequency bands and hardware. The integration of these technologies, known as integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), aims to enhance spectral, energy, and cost efficiency. ISAC technology is expected to play a significant role in 6G and beyond standards. This project employs artificial intelligence (AI) to design such solutions and establish theoretical foundations for ISAC.

Research group

As a doctoral candidate you will get to conduct high-quality research independently, and to work as an active member of the Statistical Machine Learning and Optimization group led by Professors Esa Ollila and Sergiy Vorobyov .  The group conduct research on statistical signal processing, estimation and detection theory, convex optimization, large scale data science, and wireless communications. The group belong to the Department of Information and Communication Engineering at the School of Electrical Engineering, Aalto University.

Your role ang goals

The Doctoral Researcher will join new Academy of Finland project AoF-ISAC   but the student can be involved in other projects as well.  AoF-ISAC is a unique collaborative research effort with international research partners from two Universities in US. The research will have strong theoretical, simulation, and possible experimental investigations with real channel data. As a PhD student you are expected to write high-quality scientific publications together with other members of the team. You will have possibilities to have long-term visits to our foreign collaborators in US.  During the doctoral studies  you will also present research findings at international conferences.   In addition to research work, person hired are expected to participate in teaching following the standard practices at the department.  

Qualifications

We expect the hired student to have:

  • Strong mathematical background
  • Excellent analytical, technical, and problem solving skills
  • Solid knowledge and recently achieved M.Sc. degree (or have submitted his/hers Master thesis for assessment by the application deadline) in at least one of the following areas: signal processing, communications engineering, optimization, applied mathematics, statistics, or machine learning.  Previous experience of working on research projects or research groups is considered an advantage.
  • Good command of written and spoken English
  • Good interpersonal, organization, and communication skills

Preferably, the starting time is in the beginning of 2024 but can be negotiated.

Duration and Salary

Aalto University applies the salary system of Finnish universities. Currently, the starting salary for doctoral students is 2703,13 EUR per month and is increased with the progress towards the doctoral degree. The doctoral project consists of writing at minimum three international journal articles and a summarizing thesis overview. In addition, 40 ECTS worth of studies are part of the degree. If you are chosen for this position, you will apply for the study right in doctoral studies at Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering. Doctoral studies at Aalto University take approximately four years and this position will be funded based on an initial 2-year contract + 2 years extension.
