The Future Sustainable Food Systems (FS)2 research group (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/future-sustainable-food-systems), led by Associate Professor Hanna Tuomisto, is affiliated with the Department of Agricultural Sciences at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS). The research group consists of ~13 members researching solutions for improving the sustainability of food systems. The Future Sustainable Food Systems research group is seeking for
DOCTORAL RESEARCHER /POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER
for a fixed-term, up to 3-year, contract starting as soon as possible and ending 31.12.2025. The doctoral/postdoctoral researcher is expected to work in Digital solutions to foster climate-smart agricultural transition (Digi4CSA) -project funded by the Academy of Finland. The focus of the doctoral/postdoctoral researcher will be on the development of methods to include soil carbon changes in environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) of agriculture. The appointed researcher will work in collaboration with the other members of the Digi4CSA project team (at the University of Helsinki, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Aalto University and HAMK Häme University of Applied Sciences) and external project collaborators, such as University of Aberdeen. The researcher will join the (FS)2 research group and will be supervised by Assoc. prof. Hanna Tuomisto.
The position can be filled as a doctoral researcher’s position or postdoctoral researcher’s position.
For the doctoral researcher’s position, the appointee must have an applicable second-cycle degree (e.g. MSc) and the right to pursue doctoral studies at the University of Helsinki. The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment. For the postdoctoral researcher’s position, the appointee must have a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline and the ability to conduct independent scholarly work.
The candidate is expected to have:
- a master/doctoral degree in environmental sciences, engineering, industrial ecology, agricultural sciences, biology, or other relevant field
- ability to work independently and as a part of a team
- fluent English language skills
- strong quantitative skills and understanding of environmental impacts
- knowledge of life cycle assessment method and/or soil carbon are seen as a benefit.
Salary and benefits:
The doctoral researcher’s salary will be based on levels 2–3 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The starting gross salary will be ca. 2300 – 2500 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
The postdoctoral researcher’s salary will be based on level 5 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. The starting gross salary will be ca. 3 300 – 3 800 euros/month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
Part time work contracts can also be considered.
