We are now looking for

Doctoral Researcher

for the multidisciplinary ADAPTINFA (URBAN ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE ARCTIC: DATA- DRIVEN INTELLIGENCE APPROACH TO MULTIHAZARD MITIGATION) project funded by the Academy of Finland. The ADAPTINFA consortium is coordinated by Oulu Mining School of the University of Oulu. The other consortium partners are Geological Survey of Finland and Biomimetic and Intelligent Systems Research Unit of the University of Oulu.

Open position

The Doctoral researcher’s project includes working on integration of multidisciplinary geoscience data, namely, geophysical and petrophysical data related to freezing and thawing processes in soils and cryoseismic events, hydrological and remote sensing data, numerical hydrological and thermal stress modeling.

The doctoral research work is supervised jointly by Professor Elena Kozlovskaya (OMS) and Docent Jarkko Okkonen (Geological Survey of Finland).

Qualification requirements

We expect a highly motivated candidate with a master´s degree in geophysics, or in related subject. Master´s degree must have been completed by August 2022. The earliest starting date will be 01.10.2022.

The PhD position requires background and previous experience in geophysics and cryoseismology.  We expect and appreciate experience and understanding of soil freezing and thawing processes and their impacts on frost quake occurrence in cold climate environment. Experience in field work in cold conditions and ability to work with international research groups are also appreciated.

We expect excellent spoken and written English and Finnish language skills as they are needed to work in Finland and to communicate with multidiscliplinary international and domestic project partners. Experience in field work in cold climate areas are required, as research is related to climate change in the sub-Arctic (Boreal) and Arctic regions.

Salary

The salary for doctoral researcher is in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system (for teaching and research personnel) on a Doctoral Researcher level 2 – 4. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50% of the job-specific component). Typical starting salary for a Doctoral Researcher is approximately 2400-2700€ per month (before taxes). A trial period of six months will be applied.
