Updated: about 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 09 May 2022

The University of Helsinki (https://www.helsinki.fi/en ) is an international scientific community of 40,000 students and researchers. It is one of the leading multidisciplinary research universities in Europe and ranks among the top 100 international universities in the world.

The Department of Computer Science (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/computer-science ), which is part of the Faculty of Science, is one of the leading Computer Science research and teaching units in Europe. The research themes of the Department cover machine learning and algorithms, computer networks and distributed systems, software systems and bioinformatics.

The Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki invites applications for

2-3 Doctoral Researchers in Space System Failure Prediction

Position description

The Department of Computer Science is seeking 2-3 PhD candidates to conduct research in developing a framework for predicting and explaining potential space system failures by detecting anomalies from real-time telemetry data of a complex system. The work will be done at the ‘Spatiotemporal data analysis’, ‘Multi-source probabilistic inference’, ‘Collaborative networking’, ‘Content-centric structures and networking’, and ‘Parallel and distributed computing’ groups at the Department of Computer Science. We collaborate with external parties providing real telemetry data and providing expertise and goals for space systems monitoring.

Each candidate will work with a topic contributing to the system failure prediction, including for example development of machine learning algorithms for anomaly detection, modelling system failure patterns, or distributed computing for efficient real-time processing of the telemetry data. The more precise focus of the research is decided based on the applicant's competence and interests, and the PhD supervisor(s) will be determined based on the research interests.

The starting date is negotiable, but the positions are filled when suitable candidates are found.

The University of Helsinki welcomes applicants from a variety of gender identities, and linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Requirements

The work involves research-related activities, including conducting theoretical and applied research, data analysis, writing research articles, and presenting research at academic conferences, as well as teaching-related activities.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in either machine learning or distributed computing. General understanding of modern machine learning methods and good programming skills are required for all candidates.

Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are needed.

Applicants should have an MSc in data science, computer science, statistics, or a related field.

Applicants who do not currently hold a doctoral student status in the Doctoral Programme in Computer Science at the University of Helsinki are eligible to apply, but in the event of hiring, they are expected to acquire the status during the standard 6-month probationary period. Please check at the time of applying that you are able to fill the admission requirements on time from https://www.helsinki.fi/en/research/doctoral-education/eligibility-and-e... .

Salary and benefits

The position is full-time and funded initially until the end of 2024. For a doctoral researcher, the starting salary is 2400–2700 euros/month, depending on previous qualifications and experience.
