Director of the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland FIMM, HiLIFE, at University of Helsinki
Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE ) is seeking a Director for the Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM ). FIMM is a research unit belonging to HiLIFE at the University of Helsinki (UH), a leading Nordic university with a strong commitment to life science research. FIMM is at the international forefront of molecular medicine research and has a mission to gain new fundamental understanding of the molecular, cellular, and etiological basis of human diseases. FIMM promotes translational research and the adoption of personalised medicine in health care and integrates research with cutting-edge technology platforms. Internationally, FIMM is a node of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, with three other Nordic research centres and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). As in all EMBL-affiliated institutes, there is significant emphasis on international recruitment of early-stage group leaders as well as PhD students as well as supporting research infrastructures for the entire UH and Finnish research community. FIMM is also part of an international EU-LIFE network comprising fifteen elite biomedical research institutes which aims to support and strengthen research excellence and provides a voice for researchers in European policy related to health systems and society. FIMM has an internationally diverse staff of roughly 250. FIMM collaborates extensively with the Faculty of Medicine, Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) and National Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) as well as numerous international partners throughout the world.
FIMM supports translational, team-oriented research in scientific grand challenges utilising opportunities created by Finnish strengths in biobanking, national health data, population structure and history of genetics and epidemiology. Research in FIMM is structured in four focus areas (i) Functional Precision Medicine in Cancer, ii) Digital Diagnostics for Precision Medicine, iii) Human Genomics for Health and Disease and iv) Data Science for Population Health) aimed at delivering understanding of disease and ultimately improvements to healthcare delivery. Medical areas of interest across the 24 research groups at FIMM span broad areas (including cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune disorders, and neurological and psychiatric diseases) and provide an opportunity to align FIMM research on large and complex issues and draw researchers, technology experts and clinical collaborators together to achieve common goals through collaboration. FIMM researchers lead or make major contributions to large-scale collaborative research programs.
