The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research unit focusing on human genomics and personalized medicine at the Helsinki Institute of Life Science (HiLIFE) of the University of Helsinki - a leading Nordic university with a strong commitment to life science research. As part of Academic Medical Center Helsinki in Meilahti campus FIMM collaborates locally with the Faculty of Medicine, Helsinki University Hospital and National Institute for Health and Welfare. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community.

Cloud and Systems Engineer


FIMM is the largest generator of human data in Finland and the leading translational research center, managing petabytes of human data. FIMM Technology Centre (TC) develops methods and offers services in the areas of genomics, high throughput biomedicine, metabolomics, imaging, bioinformatics and IT services using state-of-the-art technologies. The infrastructure platforms in FIMM TC support research at University of Helsinki and are critical partners in FIMM research efforts.

We seek a highly skilled and experienced Cloud and Systems Engineer to join our community of world-class researchers and technology experts to help us develop and maintain an advanced systems architecture for storing, managing, processing, and analysis of large-scale human data. 

The successful candidate will be fluent in the Unix command line and not be afraid to learn new tricks or resolve complex analytical challenges. Ideally, he/she will have experience in data storage infrastructures, high-performance computing and in providing, IT services. The optimal candidate works proactively, with a high level of independence, and can meet deadlines under pressure in a changing environment. FIMM collaborates closely with the IT Center for Science (CSC) and commercial cloud environments to guarantee sufficient resources of computing power and data storage space.

As a Cloud and Systems Engineer, you will plan, develop and maintain bioinformatics environment, scientific data management systems, data storage infrastructures, and computing capabilities.

Qualifications & experience

You will have
-    Strong professional systems administration experience in a dynamic environment
-    Experience in using commercial cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP or Azure
-    Proficiency with Linux/Unix system management
-    Expert level knowledge and skills in information security
-    Independent, solution-seeking and proactive way of working
-    Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate in a multicultural environment with experts from different disciplines
-    Ability to meet deadlines in an ad-hoc environment
-    Fluency in oral and written English

Salary & contract

We offer a competitive salary based on the successful applicant’s skills and experience, and commensurate with the University salary system. The position is initially for five years, starts as soon as possible, and may be renewed upon evaluation and mutual agreement. Trial period will be six months.
