Offer Description

LUT School of Engineering Sciences is looking for a professor in applied physics, especially experimental particle physics.

The professorship is located at the Department of Physics of the LUT School of Engineering Sciences. The school's mission is to train problem-solvers in engineering and contribute to a wider understanding of our world through research in technology, research and education are characterised by an entrepreneurial, global and sustainable mindset. Our unit pursues a sustainable future in a world where climate change, diminishing natural resources, the availability of clean water, the use of materials, and environmental issues pose significant challenges. By specialising in our strengths, we create sustainable technologies and business for the future.

The position is at the associate or full professor levels of the tenure track and will be filled through an open call for a fixed term of four years (associate professor) or permanently (full professor). The tenure track system offers researchers a possibility to advance to the next level, provided they meet the requirements in the promotion reviews.

The position is based in Lahti or Lappeenranta, Finland and starts with a six-month trial period.

The candidates are expected to complement our efforts in experimental particle physics research and instrumentation, including experiment design, data analysis, and detector development in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN, Switzerland. The successful candidate would contribute to current work related to the CMS but would also be expected to develop future research directions at the physics department.

The candidates are expected to demonstrate a high level of academic competence in

  • experimental particle physics,
  • data analysis, and
  • scientific computing.

A background in high energy physics and experience in machine learning, modern techniques in detector performance optimisation, and real-time analysis are especially valued. The ability to collaborate with both national and international partners is crucial for the task. Evidence of successful international collaboration, national and international positions of trust, and research coordinator positions are considered an important asset for the candidates. We also value previous experience in obtaining significant external funding, including Finnish research funding.

The research will initially focus on the data analysis of the CMS experiment, complementing the particle physics instrumentation work at LUT's physics department. The successful candidate will assume teaching responsibilities related to bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies, establish a rigorous research programme that will attract external funding, and contribute to research at the LUT physics department. LUT University and its physics department have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. Synergies of the selected candidate’s research with other programmes at the university would also be considered an asset.

The appointment process description  explains the qualification requirements and tenure track appointment criteria.

All application documents must be in English and in PDF format. The application must include:

  • a curriculum vitae (max. 10 pages) including the candidate’s ORCID
  • a copy of the candidate's doctoral diploma
  • a full list of publications including the candidate’s Scopus and Google Scholar details: the Scopus ID and Google Scholar profile URL, the total number of publications, and total number of citations and h-indices
  • a separate list of the 10 publications selected for expert evaluation
  • the 10 publications mentioned above
  • a teaching portfolio or an equivalent account of the candidate's teaching qualifications
  • an account of the candidate's merits and activities of significance to the vacancy (max. 3 pages)
  • an account of the candidate's vision on the development of education, research, and projects in the field of the professorship at LUT University (max. 3 pages).

Please specify the tenure track level applied to.

The salary is determined according to the salary system for university teaching and research personnel. The pay will include an individual pay component based on performance and competence. The annual gross salary for an associate professor is approximately 66 300 euros and full professor 69 000 – 102 200 euros depending on the qualifications and experience of the candidate. In addition to a competitive salary, the wide range of benefits that come with this job include a holiday bonus, a generous holiday entitlement, research incentive scheme with personal rewards for high quality publications, flexible working hours, occupational health care, a collegial faculty environment and continued commitment for your support, learning, training and development.

The closing date for applications is 21 April at 15:00, Finnish local time (UTC + 3h). Please submit your application and all required attachments by filling out the online form.
