The Faculty of Science is looking for Associate Professor or Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) in Mathematics with discrete dynamic systems, especially symbolic dynamics and computation as their research area. The areas of strengh of the mathematics research at the department include number theory, discrete mathematics and theoretical computer science, and the vacancy strenghens internal profilation of the department to these research areas. We are searching for an active, top quality researcher in the specified area.

The vacancy is open at the Department of Mathematics and Statistics .

The employment begins on 1.1.2025 or upon agreement.

 


Job description

The Associate or Assistant Professor conducts and supervises scientific research, provides teaching based on it, supervises theses, follows the development of science, and participates in societal interaction and international cooperation in their field.

The Associate or Assistant Professor is expected to have and expand research collaboration at the highest international level, and to establish and maintain an independent and externally funded research projects. The appointee will contribute to transformative teaching in classroom and field courses, provide mentoring at all academic levels and participate in university administration tasks assigned to him/her.

Who we are looking for

The candidate must fulfill the qualification requirements of the position in the University of Turku Rules of Procedure  (31 §). The candidate must have a Ph.D. degree in mathematics. We are seeking a candidate with an extensive high-class research output in the specified research area. Broad teaching experience, merits in obtaining external funding and international collaboration are also appreciated. Proficiency in Finnish is not necessary, but it is considered a merit, as is willingness to learn the language.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a fixed-term associate / assistant professorship (tenure track) depending on his/ her previous academic merits in research, teaching, and academic leadership and societal interaction.

  • For the position of Associate Professor, we emphasize a proven international track record of scientific research, teaching experience and societal interaction.
  • For the position of Assistant Professor, we seek proactive researchers and teachers beyond their post doc phase yet still at their early academic career, and who already have a proven track record of scientific research.

Salary and trial period

The salary is determined by the collective agreement system of Finnish universities for teaching and research personnel.  The salary shall be determined when drawing up the employment contract.

The position is subject to a six-month trial period.

In the Department of Mathematics and Statistics the main research areas in mathematics and applied mathematics include discrete mathematics, theoretical computer science, number theory, analysis, optimization, mathematical modelling and insurance mathematics. The Center of Statistics is in charge of the research and consulting in statistics within the university. Its key research areas include latent variable models, methods for cohort and efficacy studies, and themes concerning macro and financial econometrics.
