This is a fixed term position for 4 years with a start date at the beginning of January 2021 or as agreed. Depending on the level of performance, the position can be continued after 4 years.  Trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.

The position is located in the Electrical Engineering Team in School of Technology and Innovations and research team “Flexible Energy Resources, (FER)”.

Your role

The tasks of this Assistant Professor (Postdoctoral Researcher) position are mainly focused on high-quality research and external research funding acquiring in the area of power-electronic applications novel control principles and methods (e.g. AI-based) in smart grids and microgrids. Focus is on inverter interfaces of e.g. distributed generation, battery energy storages, hybrid solutions, flexible loads and electric vehicles. Position requires also active development of the power electronics solutions in the UVA Smart Grid laboratory FREESI-Lab (Member of European DERlab association). Also teaching in the Smart Energy master program courses related to the topic is an important task in the position. 

All tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan. The annual working time for both the Postdoctoral Researcher is 1612 hours. 


Position requires a relevant doctoral degree and the ability to conduct independently high-level scientific research on the specified area and teaching skills required for the task. A proven track record in international scientific publishing is especially valued. Researcher mobility and active participation in international scientific research networks are also looked upon favorably.

The main research work will be carried out with simulation tools such as Matlab SimPowerSystems and OPAL-RT real-time simulator as well as with the dSPACE based laboratory facilities. Therefore, the position requires strong expertise and experience on these tools and systems as well as on control of power electronics based inverter interfaced DER units. Also knowledge about microgrids and battery energy storage applications as well as applied machine learning is seen as an asset.

Fluent written and spoken English language skills are mandatory in the position. Finnish language skills are also seen beneficial in the position. Read more about the selection process and language guidelines: .

The salary is based on the University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff.  The salary for an Assistant Professor is based on demand levels 5-6 (2967–3460 €/month). An additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance. An annual holiday bonus is paid to all employees in July. Each University of Vaasa employee automatically belongs to a pension scheme and the majority of the pension contributions are paid by the employer.
