ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION IN BUILDING PHYSICS

In total, the number of personnel is about 115. The department and school have well-equipped research infra and access to national scientific computing services. We are located at Aalto University campus in Otaniemi, Espoo where several research institutions and organizations have their laboratories.

Job description

As buildings with their walls, floors, and roofs are an essential part of built environment, their materials and functionality influence human health and contribute to restraining climate change. New materials and technologies offer huge potential for linking buildings to energy and other technical systems, while also improving their airtightness.  In Finland, guaranteeing the functionality of structures in zero-energy buildings subjected to existing and future climates is a major, on-going challenge. The Department of Civil Engineering seeks an expert who is prepared to integrate and transform these challenges into a high-level scientific research focused on the multifunctional use of buildings and condition monitoring of their structural parts. This professorship is expected to promote the development of multidisciplinary research and teaching both within the Building Design and Construction research group, which includes the professors of architecture, and within the university to solve future challenges of buildings and built environment such as ecological sustainability and circular economy. You will strengthen and complement the research and education in the field of building physics, indoor air quality, and building services engineering.

All the professors at Aalto University are expected to perform high quality research and teaching, and to supervise on the doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate levels. We expect professors to be proactive members of the Aalto and international scientific community, and to exhibit leadership and services for the society. In this professorship, cooperation with national stakeholders will be important.

Requirements

You have a doctoral degree relevant for the position completed with super­ior tech­nical and meth­od­o­lo­gical skills of exper­i­mental and/or computational methods applied in building physics. Well demonstrated collaboration skills and a fluent command in English are essential. Your merits and potential will be appraised based on your position-relevant research of buildings, teaching and academic leadership, and activity in scientific community and society. A bibliometric analysis will be conducted for supporting the evaluation of research merits.

Experience in acquiring funding for research projects, preferably also academic competitive funding, multidisciplinary research approach, and co-operation with building sector and research organizations as well as relevant practical experience are considered as advantages.

Salary will be defined according to Aalto University’s payroll system. You may also provide a salary request.
