The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Helsinki is the only institution of higher education in Finland to train veterinarians. It has about 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students and employs approximately 150 academic staff, which is nearly half of the entire staff. The degree programmes have been accredited in accordance with the European System of Evaluation of Veterinary Training (ESEVT). The Faculty has four departments (Food Hygiene and Environmental Health, Equine and Small Animal Medicine, Production Animal Medicine, Veterinary Biosciences) and Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

The Faculty is located at Viikki Campus together with the Faculties of Agriculture and Forestry, Biological and Environmental Sciences, Pharmacy, and several independent units operating in life sciences. The research and teaching activities at Viikki Campus are supported by state-of-the-art infrastructures including core facilities e.g. for electron microscopy, genome analysis, proteomics, in vitro and in vivo animal imaging and electrophysiology, mouse behavioral phenotyping and biosafety laboratories for work on pathogenic microbes.

We are now seeking a committed veterinary anatomic pathologist with a vision to drive cutting edge research and teaching.

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for the position of an

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR OF VETERINARY PATHOLOGY (eläinlääketieteellinen patologia / veterinärmedicinska patologi)

The position will be at the Department of Veterinary Biosciences, connected to the multidisciplinary environment of the HOH Helsinki One Health network organization.

The team in veterinary pathology consist of a professor, several senior-level lecturers/researchers (with three board certificates), and trainees and doctoral researchers. Technical support staff work in a histotechnology laboratory and a modern necropsy room. The diagnostic veterinary pathology service includes necropsies, biopsies and cytological specimens from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and private clinics/animal owners. The material provides excellent practical teaching and training resources.

The appointee is responsible for research and development in veterinary pathology. The position includes teaching at all levels and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students in veterinary pathology. The appointee, like other veterinary pathologists, will participate in diagnostic rotation.

The applicant may be appointed to a fixed-term assistant/associate professorship (tenure track) or permanent full professorship, depending on his or her qualifications and career stage. Qualification requirements and assessment of the qualifications

An appointee to the position of an Assistant/Associate Professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scientific research work, have the teaching skills necessary for the position, and have the ability and motivation for an academic career.

An appointee to a full Professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, and the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Professor shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

A professional specialist certificate in veterinary pathology (e.g. ECVP/ACVP or equal) will be considered an asset.

The appointee must be fluent in English. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish (or Swedish), he/she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered.

To successfully carry out the position’s duties, the appointee must have the skills to run independent and collaborative research in veterinary pathology.

When assessing the applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to:

  • research activity and scientific publications in the field of the position and other research results of scientific value
  • experience in teaching and supervision of students, as well as other teaching merits
  • success in obtaining external research funding
  • experience in research project management, other leadership and interaction skills
  • expertise and experience in diagnostic veterinary pathology
  • international research experience/collaboration, other international experience and positions of trust
  • public engagement and interaction within the scientific community
  • vision for the development of the applicant’s research work and the research field in veterinary pathology and One Health research

The assessment of qualifications is always conducted as an overall assessment.

Salary and benefits

The monthly gross salary will be about 4 500–7 000 euros depending on the applicant’s merits and career stage. The position is also associated with a moderate start-up package.
