The University of Helsinki’s Faculty of Arts  is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines. The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture. The Faculty of Arts studies and teaches languages and literature spoken in Europe and the rest of the world, in total almost 40 languages. It also develops general theories of linguistics, translation and literary studies.

The Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies is Finland’s largest and most diverse hub of research and academic education in Finnish, Swedish and related languages, as well as literature written in them. The Department is an internationally renowned unit of learning in Finno-Ugrian and Nordic languages as well as home to the world’s largest concentration of Finnish language and literature research and academic teaching.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the positions of 

ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSORS OR PROFESSORS OF THE FINNISH LANGUAGE

There are two positions open. The field of one of the professorships has not been determined. The field of the other professorship is Finnish as a second language as well as Finnish language and culture. The successful applicants may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term assistant or associate professorship (tenure track system), depending on their qualifications and career stage.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Finnish language, general

While the field of the position has not been defined, consideration is given to the suitability of the applicant’s research profile to the University’s strategic plan and the focus areas of the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies so that the appointee will add to and supplement the specialist expertise of the staff of the Study Track in Finnish. The position is linked to the research focus areas of the Faculty of Arts, which emphasise linguistic diversity and change, interaction, communication and formation of meaning, knowledge, and interpretation. The discipline of Finnish is extensive, encompassing the structure, use, vocabulary, terminology and nomenclature of the language, textual and discourse research, interaction, variation and multilingualism as well as the study of change.

The appointee will conduct and supervise scholarly research. Experience in broad-based research on the Finnish language is considered an asset. The appointee will conduct their duties at the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies, overseeing, together with their colleagues, the Study Track in Finnish as well as research and teaching in the specialities they represent in the Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland and the Master’s Programme in Finnish and Finno-Ugrian Languages and Cultures. The appointee must be able to provide education based on their own research, supervise doctoral and other theses as well as postdoctoral researchers, manage research projects and follow scholarly developments. The duties of the position also include administrative responsibilities and public engagement. Experience in national and international research collaboration is considered an asset.

Finnish language, Finnish as a second language, Finnish language and culture

The field of the position is Finnish as a second language as well as Finnish language and culture. The appointee will conduct and supervise scholarly research. Experience in broad-based research on the Finnish language is considered an asset, particularly in relation to learning, teaching and studying Finnish as a second language. The appointee will conduct their duties at the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies, overseeing the Study Track in Finnish Language and Culture as well as the specialty of learning, teaching and studying Finnish as a second language in the Study Track in Finnish in the Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland and the Master’s Programme in Finnish and Finno-Ugrian Languages and Cultures. The leadership duties also encompass the provision of Finnish-language courses for international students and staff, especially on more advanced levels. The appointee must be able to provide education based on their own research, supervise doctoral and other theses as well as postdoctoral researchers, manage research projects and follow scholarly developments. The duties of the position also include administrative responsibilities and public engagement with various parties and institutions related to teaching Finnish as a second language and immigration, as well as with parties and institutions involved in teaching Finnish language and culture internationally. Experience in national and international research collaboration is considered an asset.

APPOINTMENT CRITERIA

An appointee to the position of assistant professor or associate professor must hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, the appointee must have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means. An appointee to a professorship must hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee must present documentation of international cooperation in the research field they represent. They must also have academic leadership skills. According to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), an appointee to a position involving teaching and research is required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction. As a rule, the language of instruction is Finnish. When assessing applicants’ qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, success in obtaining external research funding, scholarly work outside Finland and international elected positions. Teaching qualifications include teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration, as well as participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account will be taken of applicants’ leadership and interaction skills, as well as active participation in the research community and public engagement.

SALARY

The salary will be based on levels 7 (assistant/associate professor) or 8–10 (professor) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual salary of a professor is approximately €66,500–99,000, while that of an assistant/associate professor is approximately €55,000–68,500, depending on the previous experience and qualifications of the appointee. The position includes a six-month trial period.
