Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Musicology

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences , the Department of Music, Art and Culture Studies  is currently seeking to recruit  

ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (TENURE TRACK) IN MUSICOLOGY  

The employment relationship will start on January 1, 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position of the assistant professor is for a fixed term of three to five years, and the position of the associate professor is for a fixed term of five years (according to the tenure track model ). At the end of the fixed-term assignment, there will be an evaluation procedure to assess the employee's qualifications for promotion to the next level (associate/full professor).  

Tasks and qualifications 

The position will be located at the research focus areas of the department, Cognitive musicology and Music, art, cultural practices as the source of wellbeing, raising and therapy. The assistant/associate professor will work at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Music, Mind, Body, and Brain (2022–2029 ), nominated by the Academy of Finland.  

The main duties include active research work, acquiring external research funding, and launching and implementing research projects.The duties also include tasks related to the under- and post-graduate levels and supervision of doctoral dissertations and master’s theses as well as participating in stakeholder collaboration and other activities in the university community. 

Candidates should have an excellent record of conducting and publishing scientific research in the research fields described above. Merits especially in the research fields of embodied music cognition, empirical psychology of music and/or computational music research are emphasized in the evaluation. We also value high-level and international research and publications, strong methodological competence, success in acquiring external research funding, experience of managing projects and being involved them, working at a multidisciplinary research environment and, finally, experience of supervising and teaching international students. The assistant/associate professor is expected to have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Please note that candidates for the position of the assistant professor must have completed a doctoral degree within the last nine years and have postdoctoral research experience in Finland and/or abroad. Special circumstances (e.g. maternity leave, paternity leave, parental leave and childcare leave, military service / non-military service, or long-term illness), extend the nine-year rule accordingly.

  • Research statement (2-4 pages describing research merits, including external funding, and future plans).

  • Societal impact statement including future development plans (max. 1 page)
