The School of Management is now inviting applications for an Assistant / Associate Professor in Public Law for a fixed term of 5 years. The start date can be negotiated. The position will be filled at either Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on the applicant's merits. The employment is subject to a probationary period of 6 months.

Your role:

The position is located within the School of Management in connection to the Public Policy and Organisations Research Group. The teaching duties are connected to the Degree Programmes in Administrative Sciences, more specifically Public Law, and the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences.

As Assistant Professor your tasks include independent academic research, teaching duties as well as administrative tasks. You may supervise thesis at bachelor’s and master’s level. The task also includes input into the development of education and teaching in Administrative Sciences. As a part of the research group you will also participate in the acquisition of external funding as well as take part in national and international collaboration.

As Associate Professor your tasks include independent academic research and an appropriate degree of organizational responsibility within research. Your are expected to participate extensively in teaching and supervision within your own field of expertise. Your are also expected to participate in the planning of research and development projects, acquirement of research funding as well as advancing of national and international collaboration. If selected, you will assume overall responsibility for your own research activities, university administration as well as teaching and supervision within your area of expertise.

The annual working time for both the Assistant and Associate Professor is 1624 hours. The tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan.

The core competence areas of Administrative Sciences at the University of Vaasa are systems for public administration and services, management and regulation of these systems, regional development and advancing different activities of society. The research on public law at the University of Vaasa focuses in particular on constitutional law and administrative law, including its special fields, such as welfare law and financial administrative law. The research focus of the position can also be on other branches of law connected to public law, for instance labour law or European law. In addition to traditional legal-dogmatic approach, we appreciate a versatile methodical expertise, such as command of comparative law or empirical research in law.

The core contents of studies on public law are centred around the law guiding the exercise of official authority and fulfilment of public tasks. Also the regulation on the use of public funds is in focus. Good governance and fundamental and human rights are the cornerstones of our teaching.

Your experience:

The position requires a doctoral degree in Social Sciences or other relevant field, the ability to conduct independent scientific work and deliver high-quality teaching. A proven track record in international scientific publishing is especially valued.

In addition, the position of Associate Professor requires solid research experience, the ability to lead a research team and acquire external research funding, as well as manage research projects and budgets. Researcher mobility and active participation in international scientific research networks are also looked upon favorably.

The administrative language of the University of Vaasa is Finnish. The teaching languages are Finnish and English. In this particular position, teaching is mainly in Finnish. If the candidate is not a Finnish citizen or a Finnish citizen who is not a native speaker, or has not been educated in Finnish, they may be granted an exemption from the language proficiency requirement without separate application. The candidate is, however, expected to acquire the necessary Finnish language skills in accordance with the language policy of the University of Vaasa. The employer supports language studies. Strong English language skills are a prerequisite to succeed in the position.

Salary:

The salary is based on the University Salary System for Teaching and Research Staff. The salary for an Assistant Professor is based on demand levels 5-6 (2936–3423 €/month), and for an Associate Professor levels 6-7 (3423-3947 €/month). An additional personal salary component is paid based on work performance.
