The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR / PROFESSOR

The field of the position is Personalised Cancer Medicine.

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

Assistant / associate professor

An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.

When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

Professor

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills. To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application deadline.

The duties of the assistant professor / associate professor / professor include carrying out and supervising cutting-edge international scientific research and, consequently, following scientific developments and participating in public engagement and in Finnish and international cooperation in the field.

The assistant professor, associate professor or professor is responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in the specialist field. In addition, the assistant professor / associate professor / professor contributes to the provision of practical small-group teaching and lecture-based teaching. Other duties include tasks assigned to the Faculty. Moreover, the appointee must promote the clinical development of personalised cancer medicine.

The practical clinical experience required for the position can be demonstrated with a specialist degree or licensing in an applicable field.

The appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.

Negotiations will be conducted with the appointee over research funding for a period of four years, including funding for the salary and other costs of the appointee’s own research group.
