The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR

The field of the position is Biomedicine with Swedish as the language of instruction. 

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

Assistant / associate professor

An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree in medicine or in a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

Professor

An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree in medicine or in a relevant field, and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.

To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application deadline

The University of Helsinki has national responsibility for Swedish-language education in medicine. The assistant /associate/ professor is responsible for Swedish-language undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in biomedicine as well as for the development of teaching in the field. The appointee will provide Swedish-language teaching in biomedicine in the Degree Programme in Medicine, including practical small-group and lecture-based teaching. The duties associated with the professorship will also include administrative tasks.

The professor’s duties also include carrying out and supervising scientific research, following developments in research and participating in societal interaction as well as national and international cooperation in the field. In addition, the professor’s duties include other tasks assigned to the unit.

When the language of instruction is Swedish, the language proficiency recommended for successfully attending to the duties of the position corresponds with level C2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Please see Instructions, requirements for language skills and models.

If the applicant has a specialist degree or qualification as a licensed specialist, the appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position.

The Faculty of Medicine promotes high quality scientific research. The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
