The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for the position of

ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR
The field of the position is Pharmacology. The language of instruction is Finnish.  

The position may be filled as assistant professor, associate professor or professor, depending on the candidates’ merits and career stage.

Assistant / associate professor
An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor in the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree in medicine or in a relevant field, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant professorships shall demonstrate their ability and motivation for an academic career through publications and other means. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.
When considering applicants’ qualifications, account shall be taken not only of their research work and teaching qualifications, but also of their success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and other international experience.

Professor
An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree in medicine or in a relevant field, and have top-level scholarly qualifications, experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader. The degree requirement must be met by the end of the application deadline.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention shall be given to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce teaching material, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a demonstration of teaching skills as well as the applicant’s participation in doctoral education. Account shall also be taken of the applicant’s activity in the scientific community, success in obtaining external research funding, international research experience and international elected positions as well as leadership and interaction skills.

To ensure that the applicant’s ability to supervise theses and dissertations meets the requirements of the Faculty of Medicine, he or she must have completed the supervision of at least one doctoral dissertation. The requirement for a supervised dissertation must be met by the end of the application deadline.

Duties of the position
The assistant professor/associate professor/professor will be responsible for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education in pharmacology as well as for the development of teaching in the field, including the vertical integration of pharmacology teaching in the degree programmes in medicine and dentistry. In addition to participating in the provision of teaching in pharmacology in the degree programmes in medicine and dentistry, the assistant professor/associate professor/professor will also participate in the Master’s Programme in Translational Medicine (TRANSMED), including the practical provision of small group teaching and lectures. The professorship also includes administrative duties.


The duties of the associate professor / professor include carrying out and supervising cutting-edge international scientific research and, consequently, following scientific developments and participating in public engagement and in Finnish and international cooperation in the field. Other duties include tasks assigned to the Faculty.


The Licentiate of Medicine degree provides the best qualifications for the successful completion of the duties of the position.
If the applicant has a specialist degree or qualification as a licensed specialist, the appointee and HUS Helsinki University Hospital may negotiate over a suitable secondary position.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant professor) and levels 8-10 (professor) of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal work performance.
