Offer Description
The Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering of the University of Turku is looking for 1-2 fixed-term Doctoral researchers/project researchers in the group of Automation engineering. The starting time for these positions would be 01.02.2024, or upon mutual agreement, and the contract duration will be until the 31.12.2026 with the possibility of an extension. The research is done in the Virtual Sea Trial project in the supervision of University Lecturer Jari Böling.
The Meyer NEcOLEAP VST – Virtual Sea Trial - research project, funded by Business Finland, starts in the beginning of 2024 and continues to the end of 2026. The project consortium, consisting of multiple companies and research organizations, develops an integrated and distributed virtual testing environment for cruise ships. The focus area for automation engineering is to study the testing of the interaction and different automation systems on board of cruise ship. The testing will be done in a simulated environment prior to actual sea trial, and even prior to building of the ship. For the simulation, models are needed of the different parts of the ship, and the models are mainly collected from the vendors, but some modeling will be done in the project. The specifications and the interfaces between the different automation systems are in a central role, and the end goal is to develop a system where different parts can be added in steps, and tested for functionality of the whole system. The research team includes multiple IT researcher, which will support the automation researchers.

The tasks at hand require good skills in English, and skills in Finnish is considered an asset. The project requires gathering of information and communication in Finnish. The project requires both the ability to work independently as well as working in a research group and together with the commissioning teams of the different companies involved.
The qualification requirements of the positions are stated in the University of Turku rules of Procedure. A person selected for the post of doctoral researcher/project researcher is required to have a higher university degree. The degree must be completed before the end of the application period. In addition, when acquiring his or her degree or otherwise, a doctoral researcher is required to have demonstrated the ability and motivation to undertake postgraduate studies and the capacity to complete a doctoral degree in accordance with the research plan. For the doctoral researcher position, candidates will apply the study right for doctoral studies separately (in this case Spring or Fall 2024) in University of Turku. Thus, please check the student information and application criteria. In particular, please pay attention to mandatory skill level in English.

Salary and trial period
The salary is determined in accordance with the university salary system for teaching and research personnel. For a doctoral researcher, the salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system and will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 2500 €/month. For a project researcher, the salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system and will in the beginning of the employment be approximately 2500-3000 €/month.
There is a trial period of six (6) months.
