We are now seeking for a Workshop Master for the Metal Workshop, at Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. This is a permanent employment with a start date in the beginning of 2022. The salary is determined according to the salary system for Finnish universities. It ranges between 2450 and 3400 euro/month depending on the applicant’s qualifications and experience.
Your Role and Goals
You will be working for the technical service for education and research at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Your responsibility will be the Metal Workshop as a hands-on-learning environment. The Metal Workshop facilities include areas for fabrication and prototyping of metal artefacts. Supporting facilities include the multifaceted learning-by-doing environments maintained by ARTS infra. Your role as a Workshop Master includes the following main tasks and responsibilities:
Maintenance and development
Ensuring functioning of the workshop as a learning and research environment.
- Organising, servicing and maintenance of machinery, tools and equipment
- Recycling and waste management
- Storage management (materials and student work)
- Purchasing of materials and tools
- Annual planning and budgeting of the operations
- Planning of new investments and carrying out procurement
- Active foresight and understanding the ongoing changes and developments in the field.
Guiding, instructing and supporting users
- Providing users of the workshop with guidance and support related to the use of the tools and materials.
- Supporting students in learning about concepts and techniques of design and 3d/4d artistic practices.
- Planning and delivery of regular group inductions for users of the workshop.
- Supervision of trainees and workshop assistants
- Collaboration with teachers and study coordinators in scheduling and course design.
Managing health and safety
Ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for students and other users of the workshop.
- Guiding users of the workshop into safe working practices
- Active advisory on the use of protective gear
- Preparing for accidents
Your work environment
Planning and delivery of regular group inductions for workshop users requires understanding of principles of pedagogy and instructional design. The communication and relationship with supervisors, teachers, students and colleagues need to be clear, honest and professional to ensure that the daily services are pleasant and contributing to the demanded tasks and work atmosphere. Good knowledge of English is beneficial for cooperating with international students and faculty.
Individual workshop users come from a wide variety of backgrounds with varied needs. Matching their expectations with those of user groups from BA and MA courses is a demanding task that calls for flexibility and ability to quickly adapt to changing situations.

Your experience and ambitions
Success in the position requires a degree in arts, design or crafts from a university of applied science or from a higher education institution. Work experience in similar duties is a plus. In your work, you will need extensive knowledge and command of the methods, techniques, materials and equipment related to working with metals. We value applicants who possess good IT skills.
A major duty of the Workshop Master is to advise, guide and instruct students and staff in the use of the shop. Therefore, we value excellent people skills, initiative and problem-solving skills. Prior experience in instructing students is considered a plus. You will need fluency in spoken English. Written language skills are required either in Finnish or English.
