Research Environment

The Faculty of Science of the University of Oulu announces University Lecturer position in Cultural Geography. The position is located at the Geography Research Unit. The Unit has five key focus areas in education: Regional Development and Regional Policy, Geoinformatics, Physical Geography, Cultural, Regional and Political Geography, and Tourism Geographies ( ). The Unit has six professorships, five post-doctoral positions and four doctoral student positions based on the Research Unit funding. Further, several PhD students and post docs with external funding work at the Unit. Totally, the Research Unit has approximately 35 faculty members and 150 BSc, 200 MSc and 25 PhD students.

The Research Unit offers a progressive, stimulating, and international working environment. According to Oulu University’s Research Assessment Exercise and international rankings (e.g. QS-ranking), Geography Research Unit has been consistently one of the strongest units at Oulu University. Researchers working at the Unit have contributed substantially to international research and debates in several sub-fields of Geography. This high quality is demonstrated by the fact that the Unit held the first Center of Excellence (2014-2019) in Geography, nominated by the Academy of Finland. 

Job descriptions and obligations

This Lectureship is open to both Finnish and international applicants. The candidate must have a demonstrated a very strong teaching and research track in Cultural Geography.

Teaching duties include basic level and advanced courses given mainly in Finnish and but possibly also in English. Courses given by the Lecturer are Introduction to Geography as a field of Science, Introduction to Systematic Cultural Geography, Qualitative methods, Field Course in Human Geography, History and Philosophy of Geography, BSc seminar and thesis, and well as book exams on global development problems and applied geography, as well as Maturity Exam for BSc-level.

The successful candidate is expected to supervise theses at all levels (BSc, MSc, and PhD). Moreover, the research of the chosen applicant should complement the key research themes at the Unit (see ). In addition to teaching and research tasks, administrative duties are included in the annual total of 1 612 working hours.

The person selected to the job will also serve as the contact person for General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for the Research Unit and for the Faculty of Science.


Fluency in both written and spoken Finnish and English, as well as strong communication and teamwork skills are required. Assessment of the applicants’ qualifications will be based on the following criteria, acknowledging the content of the job (see above): scientific publications, thesis supervision, administrative experience, activity in the scientific community, national and international mobility, and other international activities. Applicant is expected to hold a PhD degree in Geography (or a related discipline) and have demonstrable qualifications in teaching and research, as indicated in the CV, teaching portfolio, education development plan, publication list, and research plan attached to the application.

Terms of employment

The starting date for the post is as soon as possible. The position is permanent. The salary will be based on the 6-7 of the demand level chart for teaching and research personnel of the salary system of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievements and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 50% of the basic salary level for the position. Therefore, the full salary is approximately 4000–5200 euros per month.
