Two Professors in Software Engineering 

Job Description and Location

The M3S (Empirical Software Engineering in Software, Systems and Services) research unit in the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering is offering two permanent Professor positions.

M3S is the largest software engineering research unit in Finland with a long tradition in industrial and international collaboration, having actively participated in large European research projects since the 1990s. An international scientific peer-review panel has ranked M3S as an outstanding (6/6) research unit in the university wide Research Assessment Exercise (RAE 2020). Over 50% of the research unit comprises of international members. Members of the research unit regularly publish their research in leading software engineering journals and conferences, e.g., IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Software, Empirical Software Engineering, Information and Software Technology, Journal of Systems and Software, the International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM), and the International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE). According to the latest version of bibliometrics analyses of software engineering publications, published in the Journal of Systems and Software, M3S is the 2nd most active research group in Europe, and the 7th in the world, in terms of publications in top quality SE journals.  

Successful applicants are expected to contribute to the strong profile of M3S by carrying out their research and teaching in software engineering, focusing on one or more of the following areas: 

  • Software and systems architecture
  • Software engineering in the context of cloud, fog, edge computing
  • Software evolution and maintenance
  • Novel software-based solutions in AI, IoT, 5/6G and data analytics
  • Automotive software engineering
  • e-Health systems and services
  • Engineering AI-Software

Responsibilities, Required Qualifications and Language Skills

A professor is expected to conduct outstanding world-class scientific research, to be competitive in attracting external funding, to publish in leading journals, to supervise doctoral students, to be an active member of the international scientific community, to create and teach related BSc and MSc level courses, to exhibit academic leadership. Ability to teach programming and technical courses and to teach two-week periods in China are considered an advantage.

Qualifications for successful candidate include a doctoral degree, high quality scientific competence, experience in supervising scientific research, ability to give high quality education based on research and supervision of doctoral theses, as well as evidence of international collaboration in their field of research and training (see section 33, Universities’ Act ).

Language proficiency requirements are defined in Government Decree on Universities (770/2009 ) for university teaching and research positions in Finland. Everyday working language is English, and teaching can also be offered in English.

What we offer

  • The starting base salary will be approximately 6000-8000 EUR per month. It is based on levels 8-10 of the demand level chart for teaching and re-search staff of Finnish universities and on personal work performance (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). In addition, an annual holiday bonus of approximately half of monthly salary is paid based on the collective agreement.
  • The position comes with a generous start-up package, worth approximately 300 000 €, to be used for the recruitment of postdoc and doctoral students.

  • A motivation letter, summarizing the applicant’s qualifications and experience, how these align with the position description, and how the candidate plans to contribute to the activities of the research unit (max 2 pages).

  • A research and action plan in English, summarizing the candidate’s past and current research and impact, and outlining the research plans for the post in relation to the job description (max 3 pages).
  • A teaching portfolio or a comparable document, outlining the candidates teaching philosophy and teaching merits of relevance to the post concerned.

Please mark the ten most important ones.
  • Contact information for three references. Reference letters are not required at the application stage. Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide them later in the process.
  • Reviewer Assessment

    The selection process follows the University of Oulu recruitment guidelines. The process is carried out by a recruitment committee and the candidates are subjected to publication analyses based on their publication lists. The candidates that are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will also undergo an expert evaluation. The University of Oulu has also signed the International Dora Declaration  in early 2020. 

    Interview and proposal by the recruitment committee

    The recruiting committee analyses the reviewers´ evaluations, interviews the suitable candidates and makes the proposal for appointment.

    Official Employment

    Based on the proposal by the recruiting committee the dean will make his proposition to the vice rector, who in turn will makes the nomination to the post.

    The position is scheduled to be filled as of September 1, 2022 or as agreed, and it is subject to a six-month trial period.
