We are now looking for

Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Applied Mathematics

to join our multi-talented ACM research group.

The faculty and the research group

The research group ACM is one of the 11 research units of the faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at University of Oulu. ACM unit conducts basic research on applied mathematics and computational methods. Special emphasis is on numerical analysis problems modelled by partial differential equations (eigenvalue problems in particular), fundamentals in matrix theory and computational methods in linear algebra. The unit is also responsible for teaching mathematics and developing undergraduate and graduate student mathematical curriculum primarily for engineering students but also for other departments needing applied mathematics. This includes teaching with Moodle and developing distance learning tools and courses internally and nationally. In short, the unit can be characterized as being the “department of mathematics” of an engineering university.

Open position

ACM unit seeks for a candidate whose possible specialties include, but are not limited to, numerical optimization, numerical PDE modelling, PDE solvers, numerical linear algebra, big data, mathematics of data, tensors, inverse problems, reduced order data driven modeling, machine learning, or uncertainty quantification. Application areas of interest include, but are not limited to, engineering, geosciences, neurosciences, physics, biology, or economics.

To be successful, the candidate must have a strong commitment to excellence in research and in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Responsibilities include publishing original research, advising undergraduate and graduate students as well as engaging in unit and university service.

Qualification requirements

Candidates must have completed their PhD in applied mathematics, or a closely related field. We are looking for a scholar with outstanding records of research in applied and computational mathematics. Dedication to excellent teaching is expected, also by using modern distance learning tools.

What we expect

Our tenure track is positioned for exceptionally talented researchers with a high potential to advance in their careers. A successful candidate reaches top scores (5-6 on a scale from 1 to 6 for scientific activity and as the overall grade) in external evaluation to qualify for the position. The general criteria for each career level are as follows:

Qualifications for an Assistant Professor position with tenure track: You must demonstrate the ability to work independently, have proven teaching skills, as well as experience in applying external research funding. To qualify for an Assistant Professorship, you must have received your doctoral degree no more than ten years ago (2013 or later).

Qualifications for an Associate Professor position with tenure track: You must demonstrate scholarly research work and relevant teaching skills. You must have the ability to lead research and have experience in acquiring external research funding. We also expect you to have sufficient and relevant experience in international scientific work and evidence of international cooperation.

What we offer

We offer you a position in a highly talented research group, working to solve significant research problems and teaching highly motivated engineering students. After all, Oulu is a high-tech hub in the north where, for example, Nokia has recently decided to build a new campus near the university premises. Development opportunities of a large organization are accompanied with flexible working hours and excellent work-life balance. In addition to modern research facilities, we offer you personnel benefits such as free occupational healthcare, sports and culture benefits and endless opportunities to develop your skills and competences.

The successful candidate will receive also benefits provided by the Finnish government to residents, for example possibility to obtain access to the national healthcare system, tax benefits for employees with children and high-quality, affordable childcare services.

Salary

The salary will be based on the levels 5-6 for an assistant professor and on the levels 6-7 for an associate professor of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component).
