The Department of Economics, Accounting and Finance in Oulu Business School is responsible for delivering high quality research and teaching in its focus areas.


We are looking for a high-performing and motivated

Tenure Track Assistant/ Associate Professor in financial accounting

to join our faculty at the Oulu Business School, the Department of Economics, Accounting and Finance. A qualified person is required to have a doctoral degree and ability to teach, supervise and interact in English and operate in a modern university infrastructure within the frame of 1 612 working hours/year as specified in the work plan.

A person to be appointed to the position is required to show evidence of strong research orientation and high-level publication activities. Publications in qualified international journals such as those included in Financial Times 50 –list or in ABS4/4* –categories are appreciated. A candidate should also demonstrate a great promise for a very high-quality research work in the future, especially at the assistant level.

What we expect

Research work of the person to be appointed must be relevant for the position, thereby integrating into the focus research themes of the accounting faculty at the Oulu Business School. Specifically, our research and teaching in financial accounting cover financial statement analysis, auditing and insider trading, particularly focusing on behavioral accounting and behavioral corporate finance. A person appointed to this position will be teaching financial accounting (primarily financial statement analysis and auditing) at the undergraduate and Master’s level courses and supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in financial accounting. The person will also be involved in teaching in joint accounting, finance and economics courses and supervising Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in Finance. Teaching duties and load will be specified in a personal work plan.

Required qualifications at each level of the tenure track system

Our tenure track is positioned for exceptionally talented researchers with a high potential to advance in their careers. The top candidates undergo an evaluation by external experts and are required to reach top scores (5-6 on a scale from 1 to 6 for scientific activity and as the overall score), in order to be recruited.  Career advancement on the tenure track is based on regular performance assessments that measure the candidate’s merits in all these areas.  

For Assistant Professor we expect you to have a doctoral degree in business disciplines, ability to work independently and teaching skills relevant for the position. Research potential as demonstrated by the quality of the Ph.D. dissertation and publications in high quality international journals is essential for the positions. External funding obtained and connections with the international research community are also required. In order to qualify as an Assistant Professor, you must have obtained a doctoral degree within the last ten years.  

For Associate Professor we expect you to have a doctoral degree in business studies as well as evidence of scientific research work and the teaching skills required in the position. You must have experience on leading a research group and on acquiring external research funding. Sufficient and relevant experience in scientific work abroad as well as evidence of international cooperation are also appreciated.

Salary

The salary of an Assistant Professor will be based on levels 5-6, and the salary of an Associate Professor on levels 6-7 in the requirement level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities.  In addition, salary includes a component based on personal work performance (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The fulltime salary is approximately 3 500 – 4 100 euros per month for an assistant professor and 4 000 – 5 000 euros per month for an associate professor.

The selection process follows the University of Oulu tenure track guidelines. The process is carried out by a recruitment committee and the candidates are subjected to publication analyses based on their publication lists. The candidates that are considered most suitable by the recruitment committee will also undergo an expert evaluation, assessing the following merits:

- Scientific activities and their reflection in the publication record, scientific presentations, and other recognitions, e.g. awards and patents

- Teaching activities and their evaluation (teaching portfolio; including student’s evaluation)

- Supervision of diploma and doctoral students

- Acquisition of competitive research funds

- International scientific activities and contacts

- Services for the academic community

- Academic and societal relevance and potential of activities

In this key position, the recruited candidate is also expected to reach top scores (5-6 on a scale from 1 to 6 for scientific activity and as the overall score), to be recruited.

Further Information

The position is for a fixed term of 5 years starting 1st of August 2022. A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
