Research assistant in Human-computer Interaction with a focus on qualitative data analysis

The Department of Computer Science is an internationally-oriented community and home to world-class research in modern computer science, combining research on foundations and innovative applications. With over 40 professors and more than 450 employees from 45 countries, it is the largest department at Aalto University and the largest computer science unit in Finland. Computer science research at Aalto University ranks high in several prominent surveys (47th worldwide and 9th in Europe in Shanghai subject ranking 2019; and 56th worldwide in Times Higher Education subject ranking 2020).

We are now looking for a Research assistant in Human-computer Interaction with a focus on qualitative data analysis.

Your role and goals

You will join ongoing interdisciplinary research on interactive clothing in the Digital Aura: Crafting a Digital Representation of Self in the Physical World at the Computer Science Department. You will work closely with Felix A. Epp to prepare, analyze and process research data from a field study on an interactive clothing badge in collaboration with the Department of Design Embodied Design Research Group | Aalto University for a period of three month.

Your tasks include but can be catered to your expertise:

  • Familiarize with the research literature in collocated social interactions and wearable computing
  • Thematic coding of interviews and field data on social interactions and use of interactive clothing in Atlas.ti
  • Process and visualize research data and results (e.g. information visualization of temporal data or small-scale social networks)

Additionally, this will give you the chance to publish state-of-the-art research and start your research career.

Your experience and ambitions

  • Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or related field (with coursework/experience in human-factors) OR
  • Bachelor Degree in Design, Media, Social Psychology or related fields (with coursework on technologies e.g. science and technology studies, interaction design)
  • Interest in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) or Wearable Computing or Social Computing
  • Proficiency in English
  • Collaborative working style (i.e. collaborative writing, group discussions and analysis)
  • Comfortable in handling data in different formats (i.e. video recordings, transcripts, photographs, field notes)
  • Interest in working on research (no previous research experience required but coursework on research methods would be highly useful)
  • Programming skills in Python, R or other languages for data analysis are not required but helpful
