The School of Chemical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. We combine natural sciences and engineering in a unique way. Our research focuses on forest products technologies, chemical engineering, industrial biotechnology, materials science and nanotechnology, metals and minerals processing and energy technology. The school has two special research infrastructures: bioeconomy infrastructure that enables research from molecular level to biobased technology concepts, and raw materials research infrastructure, that supports the research of circular economy targeting to closed metallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes and inorganic energy materials.

The position and our expectations

We are looking for a future world-class academic leader in the field of Synthetic Organic Chemistry to represent the discipline in research and education. We expect you to have an international track record and a clear vision of how to advance molecular science with a creative and innovative research concept. While a modern experimental profile is an essential condition, your ability to apply computational tools and contribute to the department's extensive modelling activities can be considered a bonus. We particularly appreciate if your research directions can directly link to some of the school's core activities such as electrochemistry, biotechnology, polymer engineering or bioeconomy. If you furthermore commit to the development of sustainable chemistry, you would be a great addition to our community. 

We hope you are a strong team player who can build a modern and dynamic research line based on successful acquisition of external funding. At the same time, you should be able to take outstanding science to our education on undergraduate and graduate levels. Your central teaching responsibilities in this position are going to be in the field of organic chemistry, addressing both Bachelor and Master students from our multidisciplinary school-wide and university-wide study programmes. We expect you to take part in research collaborations within Aalto University as well as with national and international academic partners, and we strongly encourage industrial outreach.  

 A doctoral degree and relevant postdoctoral research experience are prerequisites for the entry level position, previous independent academic work will be considered by the Aalto tenure track system. The applicants will be assessed based on their documented excellence and future potential in research and education, and their active role within the international science community.

You would join an inspiring community of experts. Our school has a rich spectrum of activities in closely related fields, such as soft materials and bioengineering. We also have a world-class infrastructure, including nanomicroscopy centre, for experimental work especially in bioeconomy, molecular analysis and materials characterization.

The unique competitive edge of the Department of Chemistry and Materials Science is based on combination of electrochemistry, inorganic and organic chemistry and molecular modelling. The research in the department focuses on advanced and functional materials, chemical synthesis, energy storage and conversion, as well as, molecular and materials modelling.
