Assistant Professor (tenure track) in Leadership for Creativity

The call is targeted to individuals seeking an Assistant Professor position in the Aalto University tenure track system . The position is shared between the Department of Management Studies (60%) and the Department of Art and Media (40%). It will be filled at the latest in August 2022, but the precise start date is negotiable.

The Department of Management Studies , ranked 31st in Shanghai ranking in 2021, hosts four units: Organization and Management, International Business, Entrepreneurship, and Organizational Communication. It comprises several internationally renowned areas of expertise, including strategy, international management, human resource management, organizational behavior, sustainability in business, organization theory, entrepreneurship, and qualitative research methods. Our faculty regularly publishes in the leading academic journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative Science Quarterly, Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, Journal of Business Venturing, Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Organization Studies, among others. The department has a lively, international research community with numerous doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers.

The Department of Art and Media conducts research and provides education in Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. These include Art Education, Contemporary Art, Curating, Game Design, New Media, Photography, Visual Communication Design and Visual Culture. The department was formed in 2022 as a merger of two departments which are both recognized internationally for high-quality research, artistic outputs, media productions and art pedagogical activities. The Department of Art and Media, with approximately 800 students and over 100 staff members, is the biggest department in the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Aalto Art & Design is ranked #6 in the world (QS ranking).

We offer the candidate the opportunity and resources to do research in a vibrant, international and transdisciplinary community. The position comes with a relatively light teaching load while focusing on developing one’s research profile. In addition, there are significant opportunities for conducting research in close collaboration with the Finnish industry.

Our expectations

Throughout their careers, those on the tenure track are expected to carry out and supervise research, provide high-quality education, follow the advances of their field, contribute to service for the benefit of the Aalto University community, take part in societal discussions, and collaborate internationally in their field.

We seek an expert within the broad area of leadership, organizational behavior and creativity. Relevant areas of research include, but are not limited to topics like:

  • engaging creativity in teams and organizations

  • leading and managing teams and organizations for creativity, innovation, and change

  • new forms and models of creative collaboration in and between teams, functions, and organizations

  • managing creative teams and organizations

  • systems and design thinking for leadership in creativity

  • cutting edge ways of employing creativity in addressing wicked problems and societal transformations

The applicants should hold a doctorate degree and the degree can be from diverse academic disciplines provided that the candidate’s research focus is related to the area of management and creativity.

In addition, for this position we seek an expert who will foster transdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to the development of Radical Creativity as one of the strategic focus areas of Aalto University. S/he will be expected to contribute to teaching at both Department of Management Studies and Department of Art and Media. Part of this teaching will take place within the master’s programme in International Design Business Management that integrates business, design, and technology to enable students to lead transdisciplinary radical creativity.

The contract is full-time and the selected candidate will be placed at Assistant level 1 or level 2 on the tenure track system. Aalto University follows EU rules and regulations on HR policies. Based on the regulation (EC) No 883/2004 on the coordination of social security systems, full-time employment at Aalto University is inconsistent with residence abroad. Employment duties need to be performed in Finland.
