Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

Aalto University is where science and art meet technology and business. We shape a sustainable future by making research breakthroughs in and across our disciplines, sparking the game changers of tomorrow and creating novel solutions to major global challenges. Our community is made up of 12 000 students, 400 professors and close to 4 000 other faculty and staff working on our dynamic campus in Espoo, Greater Helsinki, Finland. Diversity is part of who we are, and we actively work to ensure our community’s diversity and inclusiveness. This is why we warmly encourage qualified candidates from all backgrounds to join our community.

The Department of Applied Physics (http://physics.aalto.fi ) at the School of Science is seeking for

Postdoctoral Researchers in Superconducting Qubits, Experimental

The Department of Applied Physics is looking for highly motivated scientists to mainly work on low-temperature experiments on superconducting qubits. This position is funded by a project Quantum Technologies Industrial (QuTI) which is carried out by a consortium of 12 partners in Finland and 10 M€ of total budget. You will be working in the Quantum Computing and Devices (QCD ) Labs which is a creative team of amazing talent in its field.

The QCD group was established in 2007 and has since produced more than 180 papers on quantum physics including top journals such as Nature, Science, and Nature Physics. We are routinely using superconducting qubits for state-of-the-art science experiments, seek for new physics and opportunities for quantum-information processing. Our latest discoveries include new method to speed up qubit readout, a low-noise millikelvin microwave source for qubit control, quantum-circuit refrigerator for qubit reset, and ultrasensitive bolometers that work at the threshold of circuit quantum electrodynamics. See our Media Room for highlights.

Your work will be carried out in collaboration with VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland which is leading the QuTI project and will include characterization of superconducting qubits fabricated in collaboration with VTT. QCD Labs is also part of the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence in Quantum Technology (QTF) and the national quantum institute InstituteQ. We are also proud that the quantum-computer company IQM was spun out from our research.

The QCD Labs at Aalto University has four dilution refrigerators complemented with the measurement facilities of OtaNano that also hosts an impressive 2600-m2 Micronova cleanroom. We work with the best tools and aim for breakthrough results. Check out a recent video about our activities that was made for APS TV. Here is also a nice video on the results of our recent Nature paper. Join our amazing team to make a career in quantum science and technology!

Although this position is mainly focused on cryogenic measurements and analysis, you may also apply if you wish to do fabrication of superconducting qubits. In such a case, clearly state it in your application.

For further information of the available positions, contact the head of the Quantum Computer working group and the leader of the QCD group Prof. Mikko Möttönen ([email protected] ).

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in condensed matter physics or equivalent on a topic of relevance. (Alternatively, statement that the applicant will have his/her doctoral thesis submitted before the start of the contract).

  • Solid publication/study record in experiments on superconducting qubits, or an exceptionally strong record in a related field

  • Good command of English

  • Strong ambition and results-oriented attitude towards excellence in science and technology at the highest international level

Experience on sample design, modeling, fabrication, and theory of microwave circuits and especially superconducting qubits is highly appreciated.

Salary and duration

A typical contract will be initially for two years with possible extension. We seek to fill these positions in the spring of 2022 but starting dates are negotiable. The standard salary level of postdoctoral researchers is between EUR 3700 and EUR 4100 per month depending on the seniority of the candidate. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. The contracts include Aalto University occupational health care.

The positions will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus.
