The Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit in the Faculty of Technology, University of Oulu, is opening a position for a Postdoctoral researcher. The field of the research is materials science and engineering of cements.

Starting date: possible to start immediately or as agreed. The duration of the employment contract will be one year and a trial period of six (6) months is applied in the position.


Fibre and Particle Engineering Research Unit ( ) carries out research in the field of biomaterials and biochemicals as well as advanced inorganic materials in circular economy. The research group, with a staff of roughly 40, consists of approximately 15 doctoral students, 15 postdoctoral researchers and master’s thesis students. In the area of inorganic materials and circular economy the emphasis of research is on processing of mine tailings, biomass fly ash, slag and other inorganic industrial residuals and utilization of them in advanced inorganic materials and construction. Current projects within the alkali activation research are stabilization of harmful substances of ash and slag, geopolymerization of sulphidic mine tailings and mineral wool waste.

Work description

The motivation behind the study is sustainable utilization of industrial side streams and mineral resources in advanced inorganic materials. In alkali activation, alumina- and silica-rich materials are activated with alkali solution to yield ceramic materials, using room temperature processes. The work will be done as laboratory work and will consist of design and execution of research plan with the aid of the laboratory staff. The work is both academically challenging and has a large industrial relevance and interest.

We are recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the materials science and engineering of cements. The Postdoctoral Researcher will be expected to focus on the mix design and fresh- and hardened-state properties of alkali-activated materials, including chemical analysis such as XRD, SEM-EDS and NMR. Work will include planning, conducting, and reporting of laboratory experiments. You should have experience and knowledge of the materials science of alkali-activated materials and cements with background in materials science, chemistry, physics, or another relevant discipline.

Doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry, mineralogy, process engineering, environmental engineering or equivalent. The applicant should be highly motivated, have good analytical and problem-solving skills and fluent English.

The salary will be based on levels 5 – 6 of the demand level chart for teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The starting salary will be roughly 3,500 €, and the exact salary is set depending on personal achievement and performance.
