Postdoctoral researcher

The LET is led by Prof. Sanna Järvelä and its research is pioneering in research on regulation in individual and collaborative learning in technology enhanced contexts.

The postdoctoral researcher will work in the Center for Learning and Living with Artificial Intelligence (CELLA) funded by the Jacobs Foundation and coordinate the international CELLA research. In addition to LET, the CELLA partners are, Radboud University, The Netherlands, Technical University Munich, Germany; Monash University, Australia and Florida State University, US. The CELLA works on AI and learning which focuses on K-12 education, collaborating with learners, teachers, and companies. The goal is to equip young learners to learn, live, and work in the age of AI. The special aim is developing new tools to support young learners’ self-regulated learning skills in adaptive learning technologies.

We are looking for a recent PhD-graduate in a relevant field, e.g. educational technology, learning sciences, artificial intelligence or computer science. We’re looking for someone whose work reflects a strong understand of applied AI machine learning in educational technology, multimodal data (e.g. physiological data, log data, eye tracking, event time-series, video and audio data), and analytics, including experience one or more of the following areas: machine learning and deep learning algorithms for signal processing, speech analytics, and computer vision. The multimodal data collection is conducted in LeaF research infrastructure for multidisciplinary research on learning and interaction ( )

About the job

The position’s main duties are:

  • Carry out a research project and sustain activities that lead to high-quality academic publications, funding applications, and public-facing, creative-outreach initiatives.
  • Coordinate international CELLA research collaboration
  • Taking part in teaching activities


Successful candidates have:

  • A doctoral degree in relevant field. We are looking for recent PhD-graduate, the doctoral degree must be received no more than 10 years ago
  • Knowledge of AI applications in educational technology preferably for self-regulated learning in the context of technology-enhanced learning 
  • The ability to support field studies with young students and teachers
  • The ability to collect and synchronize multimodal data. The project uses multimodal data to measure SRL. The post-doc should be able to collect and process these data types and ideally have experience with the development of algorithms based on these data.
  • Ample experience in writing academic publications.
  • Good collaboration and coordination skills
  • Excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written, are needed to work on this interdisciplinary project

Regular salary is paid 12 months per year, including paid leave and an additional holiday bonus in the summer.

The position is four year fixed-term position. The position is aimed to be filled from March 1st, 2022, and the employment will continue no longer than four years at most. The position is subject to a trial period of 6 months. The salary will be based on the demand levels 5-6 of the salary system of Finnish Universities for teaching and research personnel. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). Typical starting gross salary will be approx. 3300-3800€ per month, depending on qualifications.
