Post-doctoral position in modelling of sustainable biomaterials

Updated: about 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

As part of the Academy of Finland project ‘Microscopy and machine learning in molecular characterization of lignocellulosic materials (MIMIC)’, a post-doctoral position is available in modelling of sustainable biomaterials. In the MIMIC project, a novel microscopy imaging and machine learning infrastructure is used to visualize individual lignocellulosic building blocks and their assembled structures at an unprecedented resolution. The aim is to develop an approach that can be applied in the characterization of new sustainable biobased materials and natural textile fibers, as well as to reveal the detailed surface structure of lignocellulosic materials, essential for enzyme-aided or chemical modification in biorefineries. The project is built around two groups at the Department of Applied physics in Aalto University – the Surfaces and Interfaces at the Nanoscale (SIN) group) led by Prof. Adam Foster and the Atomic Scale Physics (STM) group led by Prof. Peter Liljeroth. Then efforts in molecular synthesis are led by Dr. Joni Lehto at VTT .

We are looking for a computational post-doctoral researcher for the project, working mainly on the interface between quantum/atomistic simulations of molecular materials and machine learning predictions of microscopy imaging. The specific focus can be adjusted according to the experience of the successful candidate. The position is hosted in the SIN group .

Requirements

Successful candidates have a PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, Computer Science or related disciplines. Experience of computational physics simulations and scientific programming is essential, and knowledge of machine learning in that context would be considered a major asset. The candidate must have a high motivation for research, show evidence of good written and oral communication skills in English, and enjoy working in an international and cross-disciplinary team. The position is available immediately and can run up to at least the end of 2024. Typical gross salary ranges at the Aalto School of Science are 3500-4000 €/month for post-doctoral researchers. Moreover, Finland has a comprehensive social security system.

How to apply?

The call is open, and the position can be filled as soon as a proper candidate is found. The deadline for the first round of applications is 16th February 2022. Applications should consist of a scientific CV including publication list and the names of two referees. Applications should only be made through the Aalto recruitment system (link on this page).
