The School of Arts, Design and Architecture (ARTS) is an institution of higher education for design, media, architecture, motion picture, art education and art. The current key areas of research are design, digital media, audiovisual representation, art, visual culture, welfare architecture and emerging technologies as well as urban planning and design. The school produces specialists and innovators of art, design and architecture with strong artistic and technical skills.

Department of Design (http://design.aalto.fi/en/ ) is an academic community of approximately 850 students, 70 doctoral students and 70 faculty members. The department conducts research and provides education in bachelor, master and doctoral programmes across a broad range of subjects and themes. The department is currently on path to admit a growing number of students to its bachelor programs in the coming years. In recent years, it has also extended it bachelor offering by launching a bachelor program in design with international intake together with the Department of Media.

In tandem with expanding our bachelor education, we are now looking for two design professionals to join us as

Designers-in-residence

Your Role and Goal

As a designer-in-residence, you will work and share your  expertise with our students in bachelor degree courses and projects. In particular, we are looking for two experienced design professionals to work side-by-side with our regular faculty in supporting students in developing and realizing their ideas. We are looking for senior designers who can advise and tutor students in every phase of the design process, including studio work; give lectures about different phases of the design process; and participate in evaluating student work.

Our bachelor education embraces both the traditional and expanding nature of contemporary design and prepares students take on design challenges in both the commercial and public sector. We accordingly invite distinguished professional from all fields of design to apply. However, suitable candidates should be prepared to adapt their professional expertise to the needs of the educational context at hand. Expertise in digital design and/or sustainable design are also seen as particularly important in supporting the current developments within the department.

Your Experience and Ambitions

Competitive candidates for the positions should have

  • Master or doctoral degree in design or a closely related field
  • In-depth practical experience in designing and realizing ideas in a workshop/studio environment.
  • Expertise in digital design and/or sustainable design is a merit. 
  • Prior teaching experience is a merit. Good oral and written
  • Good communication skills in English are required. Finnish and Swedish  are merits.

The salary is determined according to the applicant's experience and qualifications. The positions are fixed-term part-time positions (25 to 40 percent) for two years. The duration and precise terms for the positions are agreed upon with suitable candidates but we hope that at least one of the candidates can begin in mid-March 2022
